500 back

You will be more amazed once you know this film back incorporates its own motor and battery to transport the film.
The back has dual frame counters and was made in limited quantities in Switzerland.
You are looking at number 6 from less than 200 backs produced in total.
Thirtyfive years ago the price was three times that of a camera with lens and filmback.

Really amazing piece of engineering. Too bad I cannot see it for real :S

Would you happen to have some links to documentations related to the use of these 500 backs? I have an idea what they were used for, but I would like to learn more about their history.

500 Back

They were used for surveillance and scientific projects often with lenses that had automatic aperture control.
Unlike film backs for 250 images from other manufacturers they were not used in cameras that record speeding cars.

I had it in my hands about 15 minutes after Paul bought it. If I ever saw a wide grin, that was on that occasion

A full kit, EL camera plus this back plus (say) de 500mm really turns into something that scares the living daylights out of mere mortals :z04_2171: I think Paul has posted a shot of of such a combo somewhere on this forum.

Wilko

Well, one more reason to love my ELM.

Regarding the back, in Romania the 70 backs + 100 Planar + some electrig automatic trigger were used for aerial surveillance. I had no idea that such advancements do exist :)

Paul

Is there any gear you do not have ? ? ?:)

Cristif,

If you are looking for infrared film this is the one.
It has perforations needed for the 70 film back.

You are welcome to see the 500 film back and a few other things when you come to Germany.

Jürgen,

Yes there are a some things missing in my collection. You know exactly which!
Besides the 500 film back, found at a small camera fair in Holland, the 250 lens with aperture control surfaced in Belgium.
It is just a matter of reading ads in the internet and browsing through loads of gear at camera fairs.
Wilko came to the same camera fair where I bought the 500 back.
The big grin was for two reasons, one because I found this 500 back and second because I got it at a friendly price.

Paul

Thank you Paul, I will sure use this opportunity when I will next come to Germany.

Now about the IR film, sadly it seems that this is the only one available perforated 70mm. I think it would be interesting to use it and I was thinking for quite a while to shoot IR during the winter.

However, I am still concerned about its processing: got a suggestion here for Jobo reels but i couldn't find them. Do you have any other ideas about that?

Yes I will be very nice to Paul . He has deserved it anyway . Brave Paul . :z02_respekt:

My SWA has arrived . It is damaged by transport and can not be repaired .
I do believe :z04_dm-walk: does not like me very much .
So my X-MAS present is trouble , trouble and trouble with the sender and the carrier . Therefore , I will produce my SWA myself . Then I am shure , nothing stupid will happen .

BTW , it was not DHL but GLS .

Jürgen

Going back to the 70mm film...

I just saw this on maco:

http://macodirect.de/rollei-infrared-70mm-305m-p-428.html

My poor German knowledge tells me that this is just what I would need for my 70 back. Am I right?

Thank you,

Maco indeed makes rollfilm IR film. But it is not nearly as IR sensitive as the Kodak High Speed IR film used to be. Maco you shoot with a dark red filter, HSI with a totally black (visibly opaque) filter. I did shoot some Maco with my Blad, it is also available in 120.

I read that and felt sick.

Steve

Yes, this really sucks rocks. I recently shipped a Distagon CF50 and got compliments back from the new owner about my MilSPEC packaging. That is just because I have seen to many wrecked shipments at work (I work in IT).

Golden rules for all:
- use a box at least 2 sizes bigger than you think is needed
- get an ample supply of not-too-soft foam
- custom cut exact-fitting holes in the foam for whatever you want to ship
- wrap lenses etc in a plastic bag with some silicagel
- add sheet with sender and receiver address also *inside* the box where it is easily
found
- tape up securely

Stay away from:
- small tight fitting boxes
- making it a quick & dirty job

Wilko

Jürgen,
I am shocked by that message. Please tell us more if you can. BTW, I know where a lot of SWA spare parts are for sale if this is of any help.

Ulrik

Compensation offered!

I feel very sorry for Jürgen because he has been looking for a nice SWA camera for a long time. To help him recover from this blow here are some images from the 1000F camera that is ready for shipment to Jürgen.

Of course I will pay special attention for extra safe and mil spec packing of this beautifully restored camera.
I know this will help him make it through Christmas.

If you need foam for packaging I have enough stocked in my garage to pack a small Benz..

Wilko

The package is definately far too small.
It is 9,5 cm wide but the SWA measures 10,5 cm .
The camera was packed in blister material .

Here two images of the damaged SWA .

It just serves to show that humanity can run out of a lot of things but will never run out of plain old-fashioned stupidity

Dead right .
Idiots seem to be very fertile . The worst thing seems to be , that we do not know , how to get them think normal . But what is normal ? ? ?:z04_head_wall:
