X2D and Magnetic Filters

I have been scratching my head as to which magnetic filter system to use for my 20-35mm E, 55V and soon to be released 35-100mm E lenses. They range from 72mm to 77mm to 86mm (I think) and that means in order to just use one set of filters I need to jump to 95mm to cover them all. Not many manufacturers make 72-95mm magnetic step ups and like one of the replies above I wish to have a UV filter on permanently for protection (i.e. not a magnetic UV filter that can come off).

So that means fitting a screw in UV filter to each lens first, then step ups with magnetic capabilities so that any other filters I add will stick magnetically.

Nisi doesn't make a 72-95mm magnetic step up.
Polarpro Base plates should fit each lens but the 86mm base plate is coarse thread and I have no idea if the new 35-100mm lens has a coarse or standard thread.
Maven makes some really useful step up rings with built in UV filters which would be perfect except they also don't make a 72-95mm version of these.
Kase doesn't make a 72-95mm magnetic step up either!

I'm at my wits end to make this work with one set of filters or may be I shouldn't and get a 82mm set for the 20-35mm and 55V and something else for the new lens?

Help!

Honestly, I’m not a fan of step-up rings, as they make it impossible to use lens hoods. Especially when working with multiple filters (which means more glass surfaces), I’ve found lens hoods to be very helpful. Luckily, both of my lenses have the same thread diameter, so I can get by with a single KASE filter set :)

I don't think I have ever used a proper lens hood so it didn't even cross my mind! But I do see your point. I wish my lenses were all the same size as well.

I sometimes use Kase magnetic filters. Great quality with very little,if any, chromatic or other distortion. You can get a magnetic cap as well since the Hasselblad lens cap isn’t a great fit…and you wouldn’t want to lose it!

Well, I have tried all kinds of magnetic filters. None of the are any good. Period. All you have to do is take a photo close up of some details with and without any of the fllters. THen magnify the one with the filter. Horrible. Ruins the whole reason we get a Hasselblad, the color and granularity. I send them all back, which was quite a job because I had dozens of filters etc. to try out.

I'm a fan of Breakthrough Filters's new magnetic system. I like the quality. They're expensive but the customer service and warranty are fantastic.

I preordered the Hasselblad CPL and three-stop ND, and yes, they are screw-on.

As far as i can see Kase offers a 72-95mm magentic step up ring. I unfortunately can't post URL for now since i'm new to the forum but i'ver checked their website.

but still i'm curious about any negatic expiriences with magnetic filters. I'm using Kase-Filters both magnetic and regular ones since long time and didn't see quality degradation so far. But maybe this is because i've been on 35mm up until now.

It's easy to build a cone from step-up rings. I was deep into the magnetic filters until I realized what damage they did to the quality of XCD lenses just because they were too crude to use. I sent a dozen or so of them all back where they came from. I still have a circular polarizer and some neutral filters I use on my Nikon system, but Hasselblad? For me, no way.

I have built something like a hood with step-up rings. I base on 77mm (or higher) and them use it on anything lower. As mentioned, I gave up on all that for XCD lenses and instead do what I can in Photoshop where needed.

I understand but it also depends on what kind and how many step up rings you use together with what kind of lens. I don't see much of a problem when using ND filters with lets say a diameter of 95mm adapted to a XCD 25mm 2.5 for example. This would require exactely on step up from 72-95mm.

DId i get it right? You quit using any filter with XCD lenses?

Got it. Found your thread explaining all now.
