The classic mechanical digital Hasselblad 503CWD

QG wrote earlier The pentagons are indeed a direct result of the pentagonal aperture.

QG, I agree but I was not suggesting that astigatism was causing the shape of highlight/bokeh - that would clearly be wrong. Sure these Zeiss lenses' pentagonal iris shapes (to the extent of how wide open they are and the actual lens' iris shape) logically create the outline shape.

Indeed my experience has been that one has to take some care with the light, optical traits and even specific lens' iris shape when out of focus is an important part of an image - they can lead to "ugly" effects that can be a big distraction.

My comments were generally in regards to the bokeh appearance (various factors drive that) and how astigmatism occurred in an image (the shifting or "ghosting" of a structure out of focus)I think Marc posted. Personally astigmatism is a trait I really dislike - maybe because I have astigmatism myself

I find the nicest bokeh seems to come from large format lenses which often have very circular iris apertures. The other day I was looking at a 1960s Zeiss lens for a Linhof 8x10 and there were so many blades I could not count them and the iris was so close to a perfect circle it amazed me.

Watch out, these photographs can be used without permission for commercial gain e.g. birthday cards or Library shots. The copyright symbol means nothing on this webite please read the conditions, it explains this. all the best Carl.

Carl, I agree that the terms and conditions do seem wide and rather vague, but can you point me to anything specific regarding images being used without permission for commercial gain? Thanks.

Keith,

Terms and conditions of Dirk:

Check on the CamerInfo.com terms, which the Hasselbad.info is part.

1.5 With the publication of contents the users themselves - or in the name of the copyright owners - give Dirk the non-exclusive right, to duplicate, modify, change, publish or translate without any restriction of time and location on these sites.

or is this read incorrectly?

did not want to take the risk!

Carl, yes I read this and it does seem a tad vague. I think the pertinent point is in relation to "these sites" which as I understand it would in theory give them the right to only make changes in relation to these websites. This is fairly standard practice on the www and is generally there to protect the owners of the sites. Anyone else any thoughts?

Isidor, Paul, Carl, Simon, many thanks for the comments chaps, appreciated.

Really, this series started out as a piece of mischief, a bit of fun, but then I started enjoying it and dare I say it, started enjoying the results ;-)

Keith, these two shots submitted would make great posters or limited edition fine art prints, can see them now framed hanging on the wall, all the best, Carl
