New H3D

Hi Bruce,

> I sure am getting tired about fitting lenshoods to > prehistoric lenses!

The subject line is clear, and if you don't want to read the posts, simply delete them.

There is nothing "prehistoric" about the V series lenses. They are perfectly usable lenses and cameras, and perhaps give higher fidelity images than the new Fuji/Hasselblad lenses/cameras...which I don't need to debate. The point is, please show some respect for other members and avoid such comments.

Austin

To bad this thread got stunted. I hope Steve Hendrix stuck around.

Frankly, I wish more of the Hasselblad re-sellers would both read and participate in our forum.

It would help inform them as to needs, concerns and in the process offer up solutions to sometimes complex issues.

The laundry list of personalized dealer assistance when buying a digital back provided in this thread by Steve is spot on. I have found that it is as important, or more so, in a purchase decision than the hardware itself. I learned this the hard way ... which with MF digital is both frustrating and expensive.

I use a local re-seller that provides the kind of after sales service Steve listed, and that decision was the best one I've made to date concerning digital capture.

Good point which is obvious from the frustrations so many MF digital shooters are having today.

The "digital economy" has cannibalised manufacturers' channels and manufacturers themselves do little to invest in their channel partners' capabilities based on any real understanding of what the customers need / want other than price.

But Marc maybe you are part of the 20% rather than the 80% who don't understand the difference between price and cost.

But the manufacturers need to understand that some of these cameras and systems are hugely complex and dealers' staff need more than brochures and even manuals - they need experience using the gear!

Marc, what do you guess is the reduction in the % of net savings of shooting digital over film from the technical "down-time" needed to solve use issues / problems / learnings?

Simon, with the right re-seller "partner", down time is drastically reduced compared to fending for yourself. Most (not all) issues are user error, and often one phone call is the fix.

Like with a computer, idiosyncratic hiccups become a known factor, and you develop a standard procedure to remedy the problem in just a few minutes.

It's the learning curve that's the killer. Once you get that down, most of these systems are pretty much the same. It's like the V system in a way. For ex&le, you learn the proper sequence to use an extension tube, and when you do it the wrong way, the right way becomes burned into your brain : -)

Here's another ex&le of stuff you have to remember before running off to shoot a job:
With my CF/39 mounted on my new Rollie 6X9 view-camera, you have to set the back for sync cable use, then I have to remember to set it back to H3D use when putting it back on the camera. Simple stuff, but not what we are used to doing. It's basically developing a new set of memory skills.

Interesting Marc; and quite logical of course - so much just comes back down to logic.
