Hasselblad V Series Images

Half of my photography collection is made up of famous photographer's images of artists.

Marc, I'd love to collect Man Ray's portraits, particularly those of the Surrealists. Unfortunately fine art photography doesn't cover it ;-(

I also admire Angus McBean's portraits which often employed a surreal quality.

Particularly like your constructions.

A bit of personal history - probably the 1st image I took with my brand new 503cx with it's 80mm almost 20 years ago. Our friendly dealer had loaned us a 500cm with an old silver 80mm - and I got hooked...

Sorry, the jpg version just seems bland - will work on it.

Wellcome to the club!
Many of use started with silver lenses. I wonder how many upgraded as the "new" black series were announced.

Even now I do not have a problem to use older silver lenses.
The quality is there and has been improved by later developments.
None the less older lenses still produce amazing images.

Great images everyone - what beautiful impact the 6x6 images have even over the web. Excellent - I will post a few in the next days!

First MF camera and two samples

I have been making photos since I was 12, when I borrowed the Nikkormat EL of a family friend for my first visit to Canada. Soon after I bought, with a lot off savings and help from family, an Olympus OM-2n. Later it was stolen, and I replaced it with an Olympus OM-4. I gradually accumulated a winder, 28mm, 80-210mm Tamron zoom, T32 flash, but one day while visiting Denmark, I traded the lot on a whim, for an ancient '66 500C with a chrome 80/2.8, a waist-level finder and a 12 back. I bought a Gossen Profisix, and went shooting. I was reasonably active while at university, due to the presence of a darkroom and a nice way to school, but after university I stopped using it for a long time, due to the increasing difficulty of getting film developed well, and the cost too.

I went on a long hiatus from film with digital, from Nikon 990 to Sony 828 to Canon 5D to Leica M8, but recently I wanted a second system for higher quality, slower shooting, so picked up a Contax 645 system, with a few lenses. When I received my 110mm f/2 FE lens (with adapter), old memories sprung forth, and I will get a body for it, and go shooting film again, this time developing it myself, hopefully, and scanning on an Epson V750 (which I still need to get), or perhaps a Nikon 9000, if I find one for a decent price.

I still have the 500C, and can't get myself to part with it. It stands close to my desk, next to my Leica M6, and I love looking at and handling these two cameras. The Leica M8 is also nice, but not as nice, although the results are of course excellent. The Contax 645 is also nice, but another step down, and I don't find myself picking it up just to play with it, like I do with the film cameras. Some soul went missing somewhere along the line.

These two (very poor) scans are from my university days. I hope that with a decent scanner, I will be able to get larger, more detailed scans out of them, and others. The second image is one of my very favorite personal images. I don't have a larger size at the moment. They are prints scanned on a cheap flatbed scanner.

My images are my living and as such I need to have full control of authorised uses and where and when they appear which I can only achieve if the images are hosted on my own server.

Keith, I am not trying to change your mind, but I think what Dirk was trying to point out is that whether the image is on your server or on Dirk's server, if someone sees it and wants it, they right-click on the image and choose "Save linked image as...", and they have it. This works the same on your website. If you put your images in a flash application, or any other way of hiding the content, someone can simply do a screenshot when it is visible on the screen.

In other words, you have no control. Not here, not there. It is both the strength and the weakness of the internet. The best you can do is to control the resolution of the images you put online, or perhaps to embed a watermark, visible or not.

Gee, all these images look like film ... LOL.

Nice stuff.

Happy new year to all of you ... all around the world!

I'm shooting a wedding tonight ... 4PM to 1AM.

2009 ... the first year that I will be a full time photographer ... YIKES!

Happy New Year everyone!

Marc, I thought you were already a full-time pro! Good luck, and hopefully the economy doesn't affect your business.

Yes, nice images!

Happy New Year to all. I hope 2009 is a happy, safe and healthy year for all.

Marc, I smiled to myself when I read your post that 2009 will be a year of full time photography - thinking "is this going from the pan to the fire!!?" :) Certainly a challenge you'll eat alive, and one I hope you enjoy and thive on! :) We've all enjoyed seeing samples of your wedding photography style in the past, so I hope we get to see many more this year.

And thanks to all who helped make Jurgen's 2009 forum Home Sweet Home calendar come true.

Cheers.

Some interesting things come to mind when I look through this thread. It's easy to see that these cameras, in the right hands, help people produce some amazing pictures. I'm only new to Hasselblad - don't actually own one yet - but I'm looking to get a system camera. I'm used to using a Mamiya 7ii and I love that camera, but I'm working in a slower more considered way these days that calls for tripods and thru the lens composition. Looking at the above images, it seems most of you use your Blads for the same purpose. Compositions are rather tight and as a result have a specific 'look'. Obviously this look could mostly be achieved with a Mamiya 7ii or any other MF camera, but I suppose there are other things to consider. I like the idea of having interchangable backs, both film and digi, and a large range of accessories. Again, this isn't so different to a Mamiya system, but the Blad is much smaller, a natural square format and has arguably better optics.

I asked this in another thread I mistakingly titled "500cm Cable Release." but I wonder if I could ask some advise on a kit I'm looking at. I've been offered a mint minus 500cm with wlf, 80mm CF 80mm Planar and A12 back for $700US. It seems a great deal but I don't really know my Blads as well as my Leicas. I don't really have the money but I know I'd use it a lot and it would benefit my work. I'm also very keen on getting it because I'm not sure if I will ever get a chance to get one in such great condition at what I think is a very good price. What are your thoughts? Have I been made an offer I can not refuse?

Thanks.

Tim

I am no expert, but looking at similar offers on eBay (where you of course can't examine the condition personally), $700 comes in significantly lower than the "Buy Now" deals which aren't moving, and only slightly above auctions in progress, ie. they might well finish higher than the $700. To me it sounds like a perfect deal to get into Hasselblad, a nice price on a camera you can personally check out.

Plunge

Hello Marc,

Good to hear you took the plunge and have become a full time photographer starting in 2009.

I wish you many good assignments and excellent images.
Somehow I am under the impression it will not be limited by lack of equipment.

May 2009 for you and all other forum readers ans posters be a prosperous year!

Paul

Hi folks,

Seems like we need some more V-images to start 2009 off right!

Here's another one from my trip to Dawson City, Yukon last summer....501CM, I don't remember which lens. Ilford Delta 100 I think. Negative scanned with an Epson V750.

I've been printing more of these 501CM images I took last summer for the recent BW print exchanges I coordinate. They look good in print!

Happy New Year everyone!

One more....501CM again. I included a print of this image in the December print exchange. Printed on Crane Museo Silver Rag paper with an Epson 2400....it looks VERY nice. :)

If anyone is interested in either the BW or Color print exchanges, send me a PM for details.
