Year a lens is manufactured

Breathing a little life back into this, has there been any further information found on the 'M' month? My 50/4 CF Distagon is st&ed M58, similar to Jake's M28 150/4 Sonnar.

Just wondering out loud...

I haven't learned more since last year.
"M" still makes no sense if the letter indeed is a month-indicator. Perhaps it isn't?
