Wider lenses for the V system

If you are shooting with the latest high end digital backs on the V system we all want wider lenses. Hasselblad couldn't produce one. Not only might it affect the H system but there partnership with Zeiss is pretty much dead.

However Zeiss did show awhile back silver 50mm, 120mm and 180mm ZV lenses. Obviously they felt they could do it on their own.

So come on Zeiss how about a 35mm or wider for the V system! There is life left in all those V system cameras made since the 50s. All we need are modern lenses. You have generated enough sales with your independent Nikon lenses so it must be worthwhile. You could even get Cosina/Voigtlander to manufacture them.

What do you all think?

Putting a silver (anodised) barrel on an existing optical design hardly qualifies as a new lens. Designing and building (say) a 35mm linear wide-angle is quite a bit more involved. With the V series essentially dead as far as new professional users are concerned this is most likely not an investment Zeiss is willing to make. And they are right (unfortunately...)

What I meant by wider lenses is for those of use who still want to produce square images. I use my P25 on an SWC - it works well and you can use it as a 'snapshot' camera walking around. However by my reckoning cropping square gives me the equivalent of a 60mm lens.

I know it is 'pie in the sky' to hope for new lenses - but it is a nice thought

My Arcbody has a 35mm lens, but Hasselblad does not recommend it for "critical" work with a digital back.

Wide lens

Hi! I have a vague memory of an Alpa catalogue with lenses down to 28 mm
and Hasselblad making the 38 mm for them as single lens.
I cant remember what I did with the catalogue, and in hose days Alpa
was finally to expensive............
Kind regards

As far as I can remember , CARL ZEISS made a BIOGON with 45mm for the ALPA . The lens was limited in the production numbers .
I might be wrong , but thats what I recall .
ALPA . What a camera system . The prices are far out of my financial reach .

But it must be allowed to dream .

I would underestimate Zeiss' ability to develop and produce new lenses. Remember, the ZM line up for the Zeiss Ikon consists of no more than 12 lenses.

I've used the 30mm Distagon for V system and while it is a FF fisheye, I see no good reason (other than a business one) why they couldn't make a fully corrected 30mm as an update. 35mm camera lenses are corrected down to 14mm and Cosina (who makes lenses for CZ) has one corrected at 12mm -- the Ultra Wide 12mm Voigtlander Heliar.

For those who want to see it, there is currently one of the Zeiss Biogon lenses for Alpa up for sale at the auction site. A mere $20,000!.

Mike, I'd like to see who's eventually going to pay $20K for this Alpa Biogon lens. Let me tell you a little bit about this lens:

The lens was listed on eBay by its original owner "jayaquinas" from Florida several months ago ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290325667318 ) and did not sell even at $9K. I believe the reseller "sk_photo" based in China bought it from him off eBay directly. So I don't think he paid over $9K for it. Now how dare "sk_photo" ask $20K for it? It's true "sk_photo" has his rights for any prices, but IMHO, he should have certain ethics. I also trade some gears, and sometimes list my stuff on eBay, however, I understand it's hard to be a photographer. I am more willing to sell my equipments directly to dear colleagues, friends and other end users instead of this kind of resellers.

As for the lens, per my discussion with its original owner, it belongs to the 2nd series of Alpa Biogon lenes, which means the lens is the same as that for 905SWC. It does not mean it's not a good lens, but I presonally prefer the one for SWC, SWC/M or 903SWC that I still own.

That's some interesting background info. I watch this seller's site periodically and they appear to have the best selection of really collectible stuff, charging very high prices for it. Of course, Alpa isn't cheap to start with. I priced a basic one lens kit for 6x9 and it was nearly $12k. So, I'll stick with my 501cm & lenses for now.
Cheers,
Mike

I saw the same thing happen with a Prototype "pre-series" 300/2.8 TPP this year--sold for $8K (or possibly less) from the Columbus camera group, and what I believe to be the same lens re-appear by this seller offered at $25K.

If he's doing good business, then I can't blame him, but as a buyer it's tough to see great gear go for so much--particularly when it's rare--it's hard to find alternative sources...
