Hi Jan,
Sorry it has taken a while to get back to you.
I have attached (I hope) a picture I have scanned with the V500. This produced a 1.1 GB file at 6400ppi. My computer was having a fit and kept crashing, telling me it had not enough memory poor thing - I know the feeling. It already has 2Gb of memory but I will have to look into getting more.
Obviously the file has been considerably downgraded from 1.1Gb to 400kb or whatever the size is to get it on to the forum but I was quite pleased with the original result which just needed a little tweaking in Photoshop. In fact the original had a nice smooth texture to it but I cannot cope with such huge files.
I did use Digital ICE but found that there were still several splodges which I had to clone out. I tried Vuescan, which I think may be a better solution than the Epson software except that it does not have digital ICE and its infra red clean would not remove all the blemishes. Before I could finish the Vuescan scan, the computer gave up.
I shall try some more scans using ICE and hope that it works better at removing dust etc next time.
I cannot work out how to get pictures of a decent size into the forum. I am still working on it.
The scanner does take some getting used to but so far I like it. It is also quite quick as the 1.1Gb file scanned at 6400 ppi with no corrections apart from digital ICE only took about 10 minutes.
