Which Lens for my first hasselblad!!!

Greetings everyone! What a great day! I am picking up a new in the box 501cm that a friend has in his store. He though it had been long sold, and had actually forgotten that he had it. He also has a new film back that has never been used.

The lens is where I am having difficulty, as I only have funds for one lens right now. He has a new (in store never used demo) 80mm FE lens, and some used older 50mm Lens which I could get cheaper. Any suggestions as to what a good all purpose lens would be? The 80mm lens is a f2.8, but I would imagine the 50 may be a better walk around lens.

I think I am paying a little more than the equipment is worth, but he is taking a loss on the equipment.

Thanks everyone!!

I have found the 80mm lens more useful than the 50mm lens. I use both. It depends on what subject matter you shoot.

If I could have just one lens an 80mm would be it. However the 80mm FE lens your friend has will not work on a 501CM body as it has no shutter in it. Double check and make sure the designation, it could be a CFE which will work on the 501CM. Good luck and enjoy your camera!

Jay,

There are two different systems with Hasselblad V series.

The 500 series uses lenses with a leaf shutter in the lens.
Your camera belongs to this range of bodies.
That means you need to find a lens with a leaf shutter.
Any lens from the C, CF, CFE or CFi series will do.

Cameras from the 2000 and the 200 series have a focal plane shutter.
Lenses like the FE you mentioned do not have a shutter, instead the focal plane shutter in the body is used.

If budget allows you to choose one lens I would opt for the 80 mm.

I found out the lens is a CF Lens, new in the box. I am paying $2000 U.S for the entire set up, which has never been out of the box. I think it's fair even though it is older, I am still getting brand new equipment.

The rrp for this kit was just over 5000 USD.

The last kits were sold with CFE lenses for a reduced price.
That was still 3100 USD.

1800-2000 USD is the going rate for a used 501CM kit in excellent condition.

Congratulations!

I have just been given the option of a new 60mm CB lens as opposed to the 80mm cf. Any thoughts? Would a 60mm lens be a better all purpose lens to start with?

Thank you everyone for your help!

Jay

It depends on what you have in mind to shoot.
The 60 mm CB is about what 35 mm is for 35 mm cameras.

It may help to make a plan what focal lengths you are going to need.
The classic 50/80/150 combination serves most users well.
If money is no object you can go for 40/60/80/150/250 mm.

Please note it is not only a matter of focal length.
The 100 mm Planar is a legendary lens with ultra low distortion and high resolution.
The 120 Makro Planar is meant for close range.

If you limit yourself to one lens for a while I suppose the 80 mm is the better choice.

Great advice as I am spending a few hundred more on the camera than I wanted to. I can get a used set up a lot cheaper, but it is always nice to start out with new equipment!

My friend came back and has bumped the price up to $2,300 for the new 501, new back (with slide insert) and a new CF 80. I was a little disappointed as he had mentioned $2000 for the set up, but I think it is worth it. I have always dreamed of my own new Hasselblad!

Thank you for all of your help! I am anxious to get my camera and start shooting!

80mm Zeiss is the best lens to get in my opinion!!!!
