Using a 500C with flash

New Member
Hello everyone - I am a new Hasselblad convert and new to this forum so please be gentle!
I have scoured the site for information and it has been very useful and informative. I do have one area that I cannot find too much information on so I would appreciate an idiot's guide if possible!
I have recently acquired a late 500C (C/M) with 80mm Planar and will be looking to do some location shoots using my Elinchrom Ranger.
I am very comfortable with the lights having used them with my D700 for some time but using lights with the Hasselblad will be new.
I generally use the Skyport triggering system with the Nikon and would like to use it with the Hasselblad.
Can you talk me through whether it is just a question of connecting the transmitter to the lens or whether there is more to it? If that is the case can you let me know what cable I would need to buy?

Many thanks in advance

Dominic

Hi Dominic,

I'm not sure how much help I'll be as I don't use EL Skyport radio slaves (rather, a Far East import brand that rhymes with Ractus), but from the Skyport transmitters I've seen, they have a 1/8" minijack connector (the same size as for an iPod or other mp3 player). Given that, you'd need to get a minijack to PC cable, but check with whoever you got the Skyports from to be sure. Once you've got the cabling sorted, connect the Skyport to your lens and fire away (at up to 1/500 of a second). If possible, you might want to get a cable with a "long tip" PC connector. You may have noticed that the PC socket on your lens is quite a bit deeper than normal. I've never had an issue with standard PC connectors, but many folks swear by the long tip cords.

Dear Dominic,

I use the skyport transmitter system with my 500C/M without problems. What works best for me is an accessory hot shoe with PC connector cable and the adjustable flash shoe from Hasselblad (can be found on ebay for little money, Hasselblad part number is 43125).
The adjustable flash shoe fits onto the accessory rail at the left side of the camera body and can take the mentioned hot shoe with PC connector cable. Then the transmitter goes into the hot shoe making the connection to the lens.
If you can get a PC to mini jack cable as groundloop proposes, you will not need the hot shoe of course.

Regards,
Jens
