Setting the Time Zone in the CFV

Has anyone found a way to set the image time zone in the CFV back. I have looked but can't find any such setting.

This was not a problem for me until I started using Aperture as my image library.

Aperture adjusts the image date and time to match the time-zone set on your Mac System Preferences. But, if the image does not have a time-zone set in the EXIF data, Aperture seems to assume that the image was taken in the PST time-zone (ie California: Apple's HQ). So, for images taken in Bangkok (GMT+7) it assumes that there were taken in California (GMT-7) and adjusts them forwards by 14 hours. Partly logical except, if the time-zone is not set in the EXIF data, Aperture ought to let the user specify the time zone during import, not assume PST.

One solution is to wait for Apple to fix the problem.

The other solution would be to actually set the date and time my CFV to PST but then it would be wrong in all other apps. (eg Bridge)

Or, find someway, either in the CFV, or in Phocus, or using an EXIF edit utility to set the time-zone to GMT+7 before it gets imported into Aperture.

Any ideas?

Time zone with cfv

I am sorry , that your issue sits here and does not get an answer .
This is shurely because nobody can contribute anything for your desire .

So I suggest , that you address that issue directly to HASSELBLAD and/or ADOBE .
I could not find anything in the CFV manual . It seems, that the CFV just does not have that function .

Thanks for the response. Yes, it is a bit of an obscure problem. Probably only people using CFV and Aperture would even see the problem. And most would not worry about it.

I might have a play with some EXIF editing software to see if I can put a time-zone extension into the image date field before importing into Aperture. Or use the "adjust date / time" function in Aperture to get it right after import. I guess that it is not a big deal anyway. Just looks a bit funny to have a daytime image that says it was shot at night...

Does anyone know of some good EXIF editing software on the Mac platform?

Hello Peter,

It is a good idea from Jürgen to report this issue to Hasselblad in Sweden.
They may not be able to come up with a solution now but it may be put on the list of improvemnts for new software for the CFV.

Paul,

I will raise this with Hasselblad but I doubt if there is much they can do. Some research indicates that the EXIF "standard" (not a formal standard) does not really support time zone data in the image date field (although some cameras do put it there as a "-7:00" after the time. The only correct place to keep time zone data is in the GPS fields, not something that the CFV can support.

Maybe Hasselblad can allow us to enter a "Time zone" setting in the CFV menu and then store that in the GPS fields. Maybe not. The whole EXIF model is badly defined.

Can't really blame Hasselblad for a weakness in a defacto standard.

I just sent this email to Hasselblad:

CFV Enhancement Suggestion:

Images captured by the CFV back do not have "time zone" data in the EXIF metadata stored in the image. When the image is processed and stored as a TIFF file in a program like Apple's Aperture, the time displayed in the "Image Date" field is wrong because some wrong assumptions are being made by Aperture about the time zone in which the photo was taken. Partly the issue is caused by the Apple software. But Aperture works OK with images shot on other digital cameras, because they appear to be storing the time zone data in the EXIF metadata.

Would it be possible to enhance the CFV firmware to have a menu option next to the date and time settings where the user can select the time zone (e.g. -12:00 to +12:00) to be written into the image metadata. This should enable the image to be displayed correctly in applications like Aperture.

================

Let's see if I get any response.

Peter,

There are some clever software guys with Hasselblad in Denmark and Sweden.
They can only tackle a problem or try to fulfill a wish when they know of it.

Lets see what their answer is in this matter.
