My new toy arrived this morning fresh from ebay. Less than £750 and in near mint condition with the Hasselblad 93mm UV filter and cap.

Hello Ed,

Nice shot from your new love.
I am sure you will be delighted with the images made with this Distagon lens.

Thanks, I am looking forward to getting out and using it.

The image itself was taken on a Canon 5DMk2 using an 80mm Planar at f8 with 16mm Extension tube on the Mirex Tilt/Shift adapter using full tilt to give a sharp plane of focus diagonally from the bottom front of the lens to the rear top. Lit with an on camera flash bounced into a small Lastolite ezybalance (white side).

Works really well I think.

750 quid?? That is bloody cheap :) Take good care of her, you will love the pictures she can make. The CF40 is my #2 favourite, the CF50 being #1.

I was lucky it was on the evening after the change to BST and the auction snipers were 1 hour out of sync. I lost an auction a couple of hours earlier for a minty CF 120 Macro by using a sniper so kept an eye on this one for the last 30 minutes putting my bid in with 20 seconds left.

I was prepared to go to £1000 so consider it a real bargain.

One needs a bit of luck every now and then :) 1000 quid for a good CF40 is still cheap.

It's a beauty alright......and an excellent photo of it! Impressive setup you put together to take this photo.

Saved a copy of it in my folder with photos of Hasselblad lenses and cameras....hope you don't mind. I can't collect all of the cameras & lenses, so I'll have to make due with photos of them. :)

Thanks, glad you like the image.

Mirex Adapter

Hi Ed

Thanks for showing us how this adapter can be put to good use.
I really need to get one now!

Cheers
S:)

Really, really great picture!

Ed,

That's one marvelous picture of the 40mm CF CLE. I have one too, bought new in 1998 in Amsterdam for the equivalent of Euro 3700, so you got one hell of a deal. Judging by the picture you took of it I see it is in good hands and you deserve the bargain!

I do some product work and I know how difficult it is to get shots like this, sharp diagonally from bottom to top and nicely lit. Nothing fancy, just the product at it's best. No problem with the lighting but the uniform in focus sharpness is the holy grail for this kind of work. Recognizing an expert, I thought I'd ask you for some advice.

Can I use the Mirex Tilt/Shift adapter on my Nikons (D700 or D3). I see on their webpage that the Hasselbald adapter has a T-mount, M42x0,75 interface. Does this mean I can use a generic T adapter to connect it to my Nikon? Is that the set up you use on your Canon? I presume I can use my Hasselblad extension tubes as you did without problems. Any info on the current price for the Mirex?

Regards,

Carlo

Mirex price

Ed,

I got the price from their site:

Hasselbald adapter with direct Nikon connection: Euro 424.

For T connection Euro 399.

Hi Carlo,

Many thanks for the kind words, not sure I would consider myself an expert but I do like using Tilt/Shift lenses.

Yes, you can use a T-mount adapter to use the Mirex on a Nikon and if I was buying it again I would plump for that rather than the fixed Canon EOS version that I bought. If I didn't already have Hasselblad lenses I would also probably go for the Mamiya 645 version as a) they are cheaper to buy, and b) they go wider as well as having a shift lens in their lineup which could also be used to increase the available movements.

Aparantly there are a few issues when using on a D700 (or any Camera with a built in flash) as the pentaprism housing can get in the way of some of the movements and the lock down screw of the Adapter, but people have worked around this (taking the screw out for example or turning the camera upside down. Using extension tubes can be done either with Hasselblas ones, or provided they are not too long Nikon Fit ones (this may be a good way to use the adapter on a D700 as it would move the Mirex away from the body).

When I bought my Mirex last year the price was 464.64 euros including shipping, I suspect it is still much the same. It is a brilliantly engineered bit of kit, and in comparison to a Canon tilt/shift more versatile and still cheaper.

Hope this helps, Eddie.

T mount Mirex

Eddie,

Thanks for your reply. Expert is as expert does. The 40 CF picture is definitely expert (as others have also remarked). It makes me want to go and pick up the lens!

>>you can use a T-mount adapter to use the Mirex on a Nikon and if I was buying it again I would plump for that rather than the fixed Canon EOS version>>

Why would you go for the T-mount version?

I am aware of the limitations of built-in flash DSLRs. Possibly the T mount adapter will allow for a little ore space?

Because I was seriously considering moving from Canon back to Nikon, but the loss of the Mirex and the 24L TS-E Mk2 (possibly Canon's sharpest ever lens) stopped me. The T mount version would allow the use on other camera bodies.

T-mount Mires

Are there any down sides that you are aware of in ordering the T-mount version? I ask because it's a pricey piece of kit and I want to get it right first time.

I am not aware of any downsides to the T mount version, but if I was sure I was staying with a particular make of camera then I would go for the fixed mount as I believe that the tolerances would be better than that of a variable mount as it would be specifically made for the camera. But if there was a chance you might want to change systems then the T mount would be a better option.
