Need advice on using Metz54-MZ4 with 500 c/m

Apologies in advance but I am really undereducated when it comes to using this flash on my 500 c/m. I have the SCA 301 adapter and sync cord but I need some tutoring as to how to use it. Do I just connect the sync cord to the lens and flash and set it on Auto? Somehow that doesn't sound right. Or do I do set the ISO and f/stop on the flash, leaving it on auto and fire away? I'm not looking to do anything really creative in the beginning. I just want to be able to get some keepers most of the time.

Right now I use an SB-800 on my Nikon DSLRs and usually shoot in manual mode and adjust my aperture and sync speed to suit the situation. What do I do differently with the Metz? Do I need to get one of the old potato mashers, or will the 54-MZ4 work just fine?

Thanks for putting up with what must seem to be a very basic question.

Since there is no TTL controlled flash with your camera you need to give the Metz some information about film ISO and aperture.

Set the IS0 number on the Metz according to the film you are using.
Distance of the subject to the camera is essential for the selected aperture:
With the 54 MZ and ISO 100 the max distance is 6.8 m at F8.
This follows from the guide number: 54:8 gives 6.8
Large subjects reflecting light closer to camera will decrease the output of the torch automatically.

You can use all shutterspeeds because the leaf shutter is sync with the torch with all speeds.
I recommend to use 1/125 to start with.
