Life with the Planar CFi f3,5/100

Hasselblad used to make a special camera system that allowed to record images for scientific purposes.

This system used a heavily modified 500ELM body and two special lenses:

A 100 mm Planar lens and a 60 mm Biogon lens.
Both lenses show extreme low distortion.

The camera does not have an auxilary shutter nor does it have a mirror.
Framing is done by a special finder.
The film backs are the only ones without a dark slide!
There is no room for a dark slide since the rear of the camera body holds a special plate with marks that are recorded on all frames.

Think of all the hairline crosses you see on the NASA pictures taken on the Moon with HB cameras. The etched hairlines are on the so called Reseau (glass) plate and allow accurate photogrammatic measurements to be made.

These MK (MessKamera) cameras & lenses are in the superior league in photographic accuracy, well beyond mere mortal stuff like SWC Biogons and the lot ;-)

PLANAR 100 survey

Thank you Simon for your survey about the the CFi 3,5/100 PLANAR .

I will have to reread the report .
Thanks also for the images . I am shure , the scanned images in jpeg format do not really show the quality that lens produces .

This MKWE is still for sale on Ebay. I believe it's more or less an SWC with special back and electric winder. Pretty awesome looking camera although asking price is 36,700 USD. Ouch.

The last two photos I referred to above follow - full image as 800x800 and then a 100% crop of small detail areas.
Note the GPO stone building image is an Ektar 100 comparison with the the Provia 100 version above.
Cheers. :)

It is gratifying to see a great lens being used.

Narrowing my V system was one of those "life experiences" as I tighten down to most used gear, and get less used gear into the hands of those who will love it as I did.

The Hasselblad 500 V system has been part of my photo trek for over 40 years. A Hasselblad V and Leica M have been constant companions that have seen other cameras and systems come and go like boarding house patrons. The V and M lived with me where others only visited, then quietly disappeared into the night ... some of which I can barely remember and none of which I miss ... except maybe two ... the Mamiya 7-II with its' amazing 43mm, and the Hasselblad X-Pan-II.

I still have an unaltered 203FE kit with 50mm to 350mm ... and for the first time in 30 years I can fit all my V gear into one Think Tank Airport International roller bag ... LOL!

I still have a 50/4 CFi in mint condition for sale if anyone is looking for one. I also need to review the endless collection of detail stuff I assembled over the years, some of which collectors may want. When I get the time I'll post shots of some to ask what they are and how they work. Nothing really rare I'm sure, but perhaps needed to fill out some collection of Hasselblad do-dads.

For now, I will keep the 30/3.5 CFi for use on the 203FE and Hasselblad H3D-II. It is a good novelty lens especially for humorous advertising shots.

Many thanks Wilko for the explanation.

Jurgen, I agree that we do not truly see the degree of resolution and other attributes.

The film was scanned to a high resolution TIFF file. After doing the 100% crop I converted them to a low compression JPEG to enable publication here.

But, I hope you get the idea from the limitations of the images' conversion.

Cheers.

CFi100/60

I could not agree more, this is the set I love most, also with the new CFV-39 digital back on my 501CM

I have two of the 80mm F2.8 black CT* Planar lenses, but I love to use my 100mm F3.5 black CT* Planar; that lens is really something special to me.

I bought mine back when I was photographing weddings, the 100mm, and the 60mm F3.5 CT* Distagon made a nice lightweight set. Could do 90% of the work with those two lenses. Quite a pair.

Well I have now also finally got round to buying this classic lens. :proud:

I purchased the CF version of this lens in what appears to be mint condition, serial number 6962532 for UK £470. It should arrive tomorrow so I can check it over.

It is a shame that it was never made as a CFE version for my 203FE so I will need to remember to keep the lens stopped down for accurate metering.

Can anyone tell me if the meter on the 203FE still works (in manual mode) if I use the lens shutter instead of the focal plane shutter?

Regards

Kevin

Yes, it "works".
In fact you push the button and the 203 will tell you what speed to use. This speed must be aligned to the max aperture value of your lens. The same with an cfe lens with a H body in fact.
So if the speed shown by the 203 is 1/250 with your 100mm 3.5 lens, then you syncronize the speed ring with aperture at 3.5 to 1/250 and then you may turn the 2 rings together.
Big problem when you have to much sun: it will not show you a speed of 1/8000.

Lens Shutter blades bent

Hi, I received my lens today and apart from a lot of dirt and dust the lens appeared to be in very good condition.

However when I inspected the central shutter two of the leaf shutter blades are bent at the tips, 1 outwards towards the front of the lens and one inwards.

Is this normal? I am concerned that this may cause light leakage and uneven exposure. Also how did the blades become bent - is there a some particle inside the lens assembly?

I have attached a picture to show the shutter and would appreciate any opinions you may have on this.

Regards

Kevin

The bent tips are normal Kevin. They keep the blades from slamming into each other. Hope you enjoy your lens. They are wonderful!

All shutters are like this one. The 2 leafs folded are longer than others to close the shutter. If they are not folded than the break them self and after few time they are dead.

Thank you for your reassuring advice.

Please excuse my ignorance but I have only used F or FE lenses before so this is my first C lens.

I now have the option of using the lens shutter or the focal plane shutter according to my needs.

Regards

Kevin

Don't worry Kevin. We have all experienced that near heart failure when we the very first time take a close look at a Hasselblad/CZ lens!

Use it a lot and enjoy it!

modding an MK70 100mm lens

Hi Folks -
Can you tell me how to find polypal? I've just found a 100mm MK70 lens that i would like to modify for use on a 500, and was wondering how he did his modification!
Thanks - and best to all - Ed

I use non CFE and non FE lenses on my 203FE stopped down with wide open metering. I just need to compensate with the iso dial on the E12.

Well, If you use M mode you will put number on your lens.
Example for a F 110mm (not FE)
2.8-->1
4-->2
5.6 -->3
8--> 4
11 --> 5
16 --> 6
If you read french: http://blowupster.blogspot.ch/2006/12/astuces-pour-utiliser-lhasselblad-202fa.html

That mean if the screen show (+)3 than you shoul be at 5.6.

Now with the CFV I allways use M only and never read the screen. Because the Iso value of the Camera is rarely the one I changed on the digital back. And I use the Histogram to know the light values.
