Hasselblad Ring Flash

Quantum Turbo Pack

Hello, well I am in the process of getting a Quantum Turbo Battery pack for another camera/flash, and found that it puts out approx 350 volts.

That seems like it would be enough to fire the Hasselblad ring flash.

Has anyone tried to or heard of anyone using one of these for that purpose?

Also does anyone know what the conversion process is to convert a Norman 200b to fire the flash? I have read several posts regarding this and they claim that a couple of jumpers need to be soldered and it will work well.

What do you guys think? Is it doable.....Thank you and take care.
 
Well I didn't do it myself, but I own a well-working Hasselblad Ringlight and several Norman 200B powerpacks. I sent everything to New York City Flash Clinic (google them) and they checked over the powerpacks, replaced a cracked, smoked flashtube in the ringlight, and added a male 200B plug to the ringlight. They were quite experienced with this modification, it used to be very popular with New York fashion photographers. Remember the ringlight "look" very overused in the 80's? They did -alot- of mods back then. Also I remember they wanted the packs, because they said the flashtube could "afterglow" after discharging, they could easily adjust the powerpack's circuitry to compensate. Not something I wanted to mess with at the time. Had this done about five years ago, I do use the ringlight periodically, it's quite useful. Nice to have 200 watt-seconds of very soft shadowless light.

I can honestly say I have never heard of that before.

I will try again later, maybe they will have read some of their emails by now.

Any other companies that do the same type of work out there?
 
If you are in the U.S. I would call them. They are very professional and I don't know of anybody else who will take on this work, at any price. Actually for what they do, their fees are quite reasonable.
 
Ring Flash and Norman 200b

I got a ring flash today from an auction site that had a Norman 200 b/c connector on it. I hooked it up to my stock 200b unit and it fired off flawlessly. My unit has not been adjusted by NY Clinic or anyone else.

There is no afterglow noticeable. I am going to convert another ring flash I have with a Norman connector and see if that one also works well.

Have tried several other options for firing these units off and all have not worked until the Norman. I was told that a Norman 200C should NOT be used, but again not sure why as both units have pretty similar outputs.

The good thing about the 200b is that they are readily available at very reasonable prices.
 
It's been a few years ago, but as I recall, if the tube "afterglowed" then they replaced components in the 200b pack itself. That's why I had to send both of mine along with my ringlight (they also replaced the smoked flashtube, it was the last one they had in stock, from long ago.

Good to hear it fires OK. I really like my two units. It's good to have 200WS that's not two heavy to carry around, with a regular flashunit, or the ringlight.
