Hasselblad photokina news 2010

Let's see. I can give my impressions from the Photokina by Thursday evening but until then we will know already what has been unveiled. Will you also visit the Photokina? (for me it is very easy as I have a 30 min. train connection to the fair).

No , I will not visit the PHOTOKINA . Too far for me , about 500km , one way.

New software : I could imagine , that FLEXCOLOR is now integrated into PHOCUS , which would make sense to me .
New digital back : what about the H4D-40 back as a CFV-40 back ? ? ?
New lenses : Not for V-SYSTEM . CZ-LENSES cover the total desired range .
New camera : A kind of digital X-PAN ? ? ? For me this would make more sense than a low cost entry model into the H-SYSTEM .

Even if some facts will be reveiled by Thursday , give us your impressions from the PHOTOKINA as there are many more things to see than just HASSELBLAD .

It would be really nice if Hasselblad introduced a camera more suited towards advanced amateurs, but I doubt this will happen.

Hasselblad has enough trouble producing and marketing the H series.
These are tough times for any manufacturer of high grade camera systems.

Better count our blessings that Hasselblad still supplies parts for and services the cameras that are considered a unique icon for professional cameras.

Surprised to see a new Leaf product after the companies closure.
Part of the assets of Leaf were bought by Phase One in Denmark.

Kodak decided not to cover any more losses from Leaf.
That seemed to be the end of Leaf products.

50MP back for V-series

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that Hasselblad has a 50MP back for the V-series. I don't know if it's FULL frame but I guess they didn't abandon us V-series shooters afterall.

It is still a rectangular sensor of the same size as the CFV-39's sensor. So no sensation but nice anyway.

I can't find anywhere where it gives or shows the sensor size. However, I'm sure they would be touting that it's full frame if it really was.

Interesting that in the press release for the H4D-31 they state: "At the same time, Hasselblad wanted to
offer its V-System customers a digital alternative by bundling the H4D-31 with a CF-lens adapter for
mounting V-System lenses."

I think the digital alternative most V-System users REALLY want is a full frame square sensor back. If Hasselblad really wanted to meet the needs of it's established customer base, this would be their priority. It puzzles me to no end why they don't seem to get it.

I think there would be far more sales for a 40+ megapixel full frame square sensor back than there ever will be for the CFV-50.

Disappointed, once again.

Forgive my ignorance - this question has been posed many times before: why is it so difficult to manufacture a large sensor (full frame 6x6), by having a smaller amount of pixel that in turn are larger in size?

I find the new H4D option really interesting.

Of course my dream (like many of you) would be a 6x6 digiback with integrated battery and auto WB. Preferably possible to use with my SWC. While I dream of this the next 70 years, I will probably move on to another camera system and use the V for black and white.

That's good to see that digital is not dead. Ok it seams that it cost always the same but pass from 39Mpix to 50mpix.
Ok same size (37x48mm) sensor, so not in a hurry to change mine. Will wait the next one, I will not buy new one every year. Funny they use the old 202FA (discontinued 10 years ago) not 503CW to show the CFV-50.
BTW, if you count per pixel, it's not expensive at all.
Funny they develop an app to use ipad with phocus as I did not succeed to read Victor mag on it. Perhaps one day a Wifi digital back to use ipad as second screen without computer.

Hi all,
I had a nice day at the Photokina on Thursday. At Hasselblad people were very helpful. I had a CF-card from my first digital studio shooting with me and one instructor helped me through some basic steps of the post processing that had given me a headache before. I also spoke with the German repairman who will convert my 203FE and 205TCC for use with the CFV back at Ahrensburg. I also used a H4D to take photos at that "catwalk" that they had set up there. The camera felt very responsive but it was not possible to review the pictures on a computer (which was a good argument to persuade them that I could take out my 1600F with 80 mm and 135 mm Ektar to make some pictures to take home).

At the end of the day I took part for an hour in a Phocus training session. But this was more Q&A with he head of software and firmware development, nevertheless a good oportunity to learn some details and to know whom to contact to report software bugs or make suggestions regarding important functionalities.

(I also visited some non-Hasselblad areas of course. It is a pity that there are only painted versions of the Leica M9 and not a chrome version. The finder of the M9 is still as bad as those of all the earlier M-cameras if you wear glasses and want to use a wide angle lens as even the frame lines for 35 mm are a bit difficult to see, not to speak of 28 mm. Everwhere you could see 3D displays but I am not convinced of those as long as you need to wear special glasses. I do not miss 3D for movies but I can see that it really makes sense for watching tennis, soccer, volleyball etc. where 3D really helps to follow the trajectory of the ball. I bought a Photoflex reflector panel and holder at discount price. At Olympus I had a look at those micro 4/3 cameras, that would be a nice camera for my wife. I tested one together with an adapted OM-lens of which we have so many and found focussing reasobably easy. All in all going to the Photokina is overwhelming and it is advised to plan ahead where you want to go).

Photokina report

Thank you Ulrik for your impressions .
Good that you took the chance for a PHOCUS training session .
Now I am waiting for PHOCUS 2.6 to become available .

I have heard of rumors , that the H-SYSTEM might have a black design soon .
Is that true ? ? ?

It is not more difficult than manufacturing a 6x4.5 sensor. It is just that doing a 56x56mm sensor would see limited production runs compared to the 6x4.5 and apparantly nobody has been willing to take the risk. I have no doubt that folks like Dalsa can deliver you the square one, provided you order enough of them :)
