Hasselblad brand Polarizing filters Repaired

G

Gregarpp

I have 2 polarizing filters. The internal film seems to have bubbles in it. Like it is separating.

Is this common with Hasselblad??

I have never seen other brands do this before.

Any luck in getting them repaired? ( I doubt)

It is, alas, common with all polarizers.
Polarizers consist of a "plastic" sheet sandwiched in between two glass blanks.
Eventually, d& will find its way in, and the polarizer sheet will suffer.
Käsemann filters have an extra seal around the rim to prevent this hapenning, but even they do not last forever.

And no, there's no repair.
The sheet needs to be replaced, the glass disks cleaned, the whole thing then put together again... in short: a new filter must be made. So that's all you can do, get a new one.

Given the cost of circular polarisers, this is very disheartening info.
Is there a typical timeframe for this to occur or is it more of an environment issue?
I have a couple of B+W and a Leitz one. Owned these since 1968 with no signs of seperation. They probably don't "owe" me anything, but would be pricey to replace

I am sorry to hear about your filter problems.
I have not had any problems with any my polarizing filters many 25 years old. Currently I prefer the results from Heliopan sh mpc filters.

Better Luck:

Yes, it is indeed an environment issue. Hence the extra sealing Käsemann filters are given.

Take good care of your polarizers and they'll last longer. Don't, and they'll soon start to 'crumble' at the edges.
But none of them live forever.

Hello Gilbert,
what is the difference of results between your Heliopan and other polarizing filters.?
Thanks, I have to learn about polarizing features, I never use it.

With some attention to subjectivity, this is a hard question to answer, but to me the slides show enhanced skies and clear subjects. My other filters seem to show a "glaze or sheen" that is unnatural on the subject (landscape or mountains). Although a lot of things come to mind, but are difficult to put into words. I can say that I have not been disappointed using Heliopan sh pmc filters on a single slide. According to Heliopan these filters have coatings 8 layers thick on each glass surface, reducing reflections to nearly 0 across the visible spectrum.

Bear in mind that you will lose about 2 stops using a polarizing filter.

I know they are very expensive, but I like them so much they are the only ones I currently purchase, and I get one for every lens and I also use lens hoods too. Overkill, some might say, but in actuality it depends on the conditions which you are shooting and what you are tying to achieve.

Best Regards:

Gilbert
