CFV 39 - what is the consensus

Hi gents,
it's been a while since its release - and I just wonder what those fortunate enough to own one of these babies think - vs the CFV16 - which delivered spectacular images.
Thanks and best

Fortunate to buy a CF-39 not enought to buy a midle-class family flat in Geneva.

Well, I had the Kodak DSC-16, more pixels is not the principal goal. Very happy to to have limitation of 100 asa, and to get wider sensor.
38x49mm is close to 56mm wide. Happy not to buy the heavy 40mm and using my 20 years old friend, the 60mm.

39Mpix is far enought, I will not change for more pixels but for wider sensor in 3 years.

I am not the lucky owner of a CFV 39 but from what I hear the results are extremely good.
This powerfull DB has inspired some owners to upgrade to the "new" 40 IF lens as well.
The new 40 IF offers higher resolution at the expense of increased distortion.
Distortion is still pretty low at max 2.5%

It would surprise me if there will be any DB with larger sensors.
Crop factor for the CFV 39 is modest when compared with 4.5x6 filmframes.

The CFV-16 and CFV-39 digital backs are a fanastic supplement for V-SYSTEM users . Many of the existing CZ lenses give excellent results .
The CFV-16 sensor has a pixel size of 9 micron and the CFV-39 sensor has a pixel size of 6,8 micron .
From my experience both backs produce very good image quality but of different character .
While I find the images from the CFV-16 of a "soft" and charming character , the CFV-39 images show a more technical character .

A big advantage for me is , that I can use both backs also with my ARCA 6x9 field camera .

That's my dream....to one day own BOTH backs! There's no way I am going to part with my CFV-16. :)

CFV-16 II

This is a pity because the arrival of the CFV 39 has not released significant numbers of CFV 16 backs to the market. At least not in my price range. I even have a DPS 4x4 finder here, waiting for such a small sensor back...

Having used the CFV and CFV-II ... and a 39 meg back on an H camera equipped with a CF adapter to use 500 series lenses ... I can say the 39 meg results most certainly will not disappoint.

The magic of the Zeiss lenses is not lost @ 39 meg. ... lens "character" doesn't care what pixel size the back is. It is what it is.

I cannot think of a V lens that cannot out resolve a 39 meg back. In fact, I have been in communication with those using a Phase One P65+ back and V lenses on a Mamiya 645, and according to them the V lens hold up even at FF 60 meg.

IMO, the great V cameras will never fully realize their potential without a near full frame square sensor, which becomes a more of a distant dream with every new issue of 645 type backs. The once "upstart" 645 format camera now rules the MF landscape.

Will there be a CFV-60? Most certainly not beyond the realm of possibility in future. Depends on the need and demand ... the technology already exists. I do know that Dalsa sensors like the V lenses a lot (I had a Leaf 75s DB on a Mamiya using all the V lenses, and have friends that still use that combination to excellent effect).

The most difficult thing presented to the Hasselblad photographer today is maintaining a competitive functionality across platforms. As 35mm DSLRs increase performance (like a 25 meg FF Sony A850 for under $2K using Zeiss AF lenses) which nip at the heels of the smaller MF backs, and 645 systems become more and more integrated to squeeze more IQ out of 40, 50 and 60 meg backs ... the cost can become staggering.

While all of my 500 series gear is gone except for a few lenses, I still have a pretty complete 203FE kit. So, I STILL have the option to go back to digital on a V.

I have ordered the H4D/60 upgrade from my H3D-II/39. When I get it, I will shoot a few shots with my remaining 50/4 CFi and 80 CFE using the CF adapter on the H camera. Then we'll see first hand how the V lenses do at 60 meg. full frame 645.
