Bought a CFV-39

Hey all,

Just wanted to let folks here know that I've "done lost my mind" and bought a CFV-39. :) You might be interested to know that the back does come with a battery, a charger, firewire 800 cable, and a couple of sync cables (and possibly other doodads) here in the US.

It is expected to arrive sometime next week. My 203FE has returned from Hasselblad, New Jersey and has been modified for digital (took less than 1 week), so everything is good to go! :z04_smileys70:

I have been through a number of medium format systems over the past two years and been disappointed each time, but I am cautiously optimistic that perhaps this time, I may have what I'm looking for. Fingers crossed!

If anyone out there is considering a purchase and would like to know anything specific, I'd be happy to help out (once I get it)--just let me know.

Best regards,
-Brad

Hello Bradley,

That is excellent news and also quite a surprise the US version of the CFV 39 comes complete with battery and charger.

You are now one of two other buyers that I know of who are waiting for the CFV39 to be delivered.

Paul

Apparently I missed the last of the Hasselblad US CFV-39 stock by a day. The irony is Hasselblad US headquarters are just down the road from me. Apparently all the CFV-39's for the US ship out of there.

The backs are apparently selling very well--according to my dealer, even some in Hasselblad have been surprised by the demand. I just knew I should have hijacked that delivery truck last week when I had the chance!! :)

Anyway, I'll keep folks posted on thoughts once I get it and run it through its paces.

(BTW, I am not one of those people who heaps glowing praise on an expensive item just because he bought it. If it sucks, I'll say so. If it's great, I'll do the same. I'll do my best to give the straight goods, so folks can better understand what they're buying. I feel this is important, because they are often so difficult to find and adequately test-drive beforehand.)

Stay tuned,
-Brad

Good job everyone for buying this product. Helps keep the V system alive, and letting Hasselblad know, that they shouldn't discard it. If I didn't have my CWD (which I am selling) I would try to buy a CFV 39 as well. Maybe next time I go for a new digiback, maybe we'll be lucky and have a full frame 645 or 6x6!

The CFV39 is not quite 645 but pretty close.
6X6 or 56 X56 mm will be an impossible dream from what we know now.
Besides the fact that it makes a true wide angle with V series lenses possible there is no need for larger sensors from the point of IQ.

Brad will not be disappointed with the CFV39.
A pity he did not stop that delivery van.
There are more interested parties for a "friendly" priced CFV39.

My CFV39 is on it's way

Just recieved an email giving me the DHL Airway Bill No. The CFV39 left Denmark on Friday morning. So Dear Jurgen and Brad it looks like the second production batch was shipped on Friday :)

I hope it arrives without a scratch or a bug.

I think the CFV39 would last with our V System for a long time, much longer than my Nikon D3x and the Leica S2. I think with the CFV39 we are at the maximum/optimal, that our V System can achieve.

Saad

Hello Saad,

Good news indeed.
Depending on the rest of the logistic system the CFV will reach you beginning of next week.

I agree the CFV39 is the best news Hasselblad has given V series users in years.
Never thought I would one day be grateful to Leica to make Hasselblad decide to give V series
users a dedicated 39 MP DB.

Even in these troubled times sales of the CFV39 are quite good.
Other manufacturers will certainly look with envy at these results.

The V series are no competition for Hasselblads H cameras.
V series cameras are in a class of their own with a large number of users that will be faithful
to a camera system that made Hasselblads reputation for quality cameras.

Hee hee -- I'll keep an eye out for more delivery trucks! ;)

macmx- agreed! If Hassy were to come out with a 56mm square offering in the next few years I'd definitely be interested.

In case Hassy is reading, 5-7 micron (big prints), Cmos (cost & power), equal or better DR & SNR (IQ) and 6400 max ISO (versatility) would be ideal!!

Hey all,

Congratulations Brad! Those of us with the CFV-16 are envious and also very happy to see the CFV line take the next big leap forward. I'm really glad to see that Hasselblad has not given up on the V-system owners. Look forward to hearing of your experiences with with the new back.

As you say....the holy grail will be a full frame square sensor, but until that day arrives, I hope the CFV-39 will be a worthy successor to the CFV-16.

Cfv-39

I doubt you will be disappointed Bradley.

I use the H3D-II version of the 39 meg sensor with all my Zeiss CFi/CFE lenses and it's all there for the eye to see.

I'm in the process of selling off some gear to afford the CFV-39 and will get one ASAP. Business sucks right now, so something else has to go to pay for it.

Those with a 16 meg CFV shouldn't feel bad about their back ... it is an incredible digital back that's just as good as it was when it first launched. Those 9 micron pixels produce a magic beyond what the spec's indicate.

I haven't decided whether to sell my CFV-II/16 for that reason alone. I may just have my second 203FE converted and keep it. It all depends on whether the other stuff sells or not.

Looking forward to your input on the new 39 CFV-II ... especially with the FE lenses since that's one thing I can't do with the H camera because it's not a focal plane camera. Do you have the 110/2? Am especially interested in stuff from that lens.

BTW, if you don't already have the 40IF for use on the 203FE, give it a look. Spectacular performance with a 39 meg back. Gives you about a 44mm field of view with the new 39 back (it's a 66mm FOV with the 16 meg back).

WaHoooooo!

Old soldiers never die ... and in this case they don't fade away either!

Thanks, Gary! I'm excited--I hope to come to your neck of the woods with the kit before too long to do some nature photography. I've not yet been to Alaska, but that's something both my wife and I want to fix!

Hi, Marc. Yes, I do think I've finally got it right now, on my sixth try. Or at least I sure hope so. I do have a CFE 40/IF to go with the kit. For lenses, here is my plan:

* 40/4 CFE/IF (already purchased)
* 50/2.8 FE (purchased one, but it was damaged and had to return :()
* 80/2.8 CFE (FE focuses closer, but otherwise, might as well have the leaf shutter option)
* 110/2 FE (already purchased--looking forward to portraiture with this one!)
* 120/4 CFE Macro
* 30/3.5 CFi (but only if I find one really cheap--this one would be more for fun. It would be nice if Phocus would allow me to defish this for an ultra-wide solution, by the way--I'll add this to Paul's DAC thread).

And then I have a couple of dilemmas...

* 110/2 + 1.4XE vs. 150/2.8 FE - any thoughts or experiences?
* 150/2.8 FE vs 180/4 CFE - suggestions/guidance?
* 350/5.6 Tele-Superachromat vs 300/2.8 Telephoto Power Pack - crazy prices, but what I'm most worried about is the slow speed of the 350 on one hand, and focal plane shutter vibrations from the camera blurring my images with the 300 on the other. I'll be most grateful for any thoughts or experience between these two in terms of IQ and performance.

Thanks, all,
-Brad

Brad

The combo FE 2/110 + 1.4XE is not recommended by HASSELBLAD .
The 2/110 is an extraordinary lens and can hardly be compared to any other lens .
As far as the FE 2,8/150 vs. CFE 4/180 is concerned , I would not compare them either . The 2,8/150 is a very good lens for portraits , but I find the 4/180 far too sharp for many kinds of portraits . Using a softar here is like stepping backwards .

I can't say anything for longer lenses , as my longest lens is a 250mm and is very seldom used .

I use the 2,8/50 and very often felt the temptation to go for the CFE 4/40 IF , but I will wait for the results with the CFV-39 and the FE 2,8/50 .

I do hope my CFV-39 will arrive this week . You might get your back even earlier then I get it .
Congratulations for your new gear member .

IMO, no on the 110/2 with 1.4XE. Unique lens on it's own.

Ambivalent about the 80 mms. It's a focal length I rarely use. I prefer the 60/3.5 CFi for normal work. The 60 would be useful for sync work since you can't shoot the 50 @ high sync.

Jurgen nailed it on the 150/2.8FE verses the 180/4 CFE. It depends on what your shooting intent is. The 180/4 is in a league of its own. If for portrait work then the the 150/2.8FE.

A bit longer lens? No doubt in my mind is the unsung 250/4FE. Highly used head shot lens. Much smaller than the 300s.

300/2.8 Powerpack is a lens I have never used. Held one at Photo-Plus years ago. Second to none as I understand it. To big and would be seldom used for me and my applications ... not that I could afford one anyway. I just use the 350/4FE for the few times I need longer than the 250/4FE.

Marc

The 110 with a 2X times converter gives an interesting alternative for the 250/4 FE.
Image quality is excellent with the 2X converter you get a 220/4 lens.
Bonus is the MOD of only 0.8 m against the 2.5 m for the 250/4 FE.
