Im after a digital back for my 503cw. I can only afford a 16 megapixel so have been looking at the CFV backs. Any ideas what the difference is between the CFV & CFVII as can't find out much information about them?
As far was I know, the IR filter has less reflections on the CFV II, the fan to cool the chip was replaced by a heat sink and the LCD screen was improved. The screen on the CFV was not one to do back flips over, the image was there just to confirm that you got an image and not meant to judge micro details or color balance.
As you didn't got too many answers I try to remember:
Wasn't it that the CFV was running with an external disk on a cable
and the CFV II was the 1st one with build in memory card?

You specifically asked about the differences between the CFV and CFVII backs and that is what I answered. Both CFV backs use CF cards for storage and Sony batteries for power untethered with no cables required for operation on 500 series cameras and with 200 series cameras that have been factory modified. The sensors were the same. The internal electrical changes, IR filter and LCD display were the defining differences.
The predecessor to the CFV was the V96c back that had to have an external power and storage source.

Hi Atanabe. I've been trying to find some information on the web to confirm this and haven't been able to locate much of anything either way. A friend of mine believes that the CFV backs do use an internal fan, not a heat sink, and that's one reason he is not interested in them (preferring a Phase One back). I have the CFV-16II and more out of curiosity than anything else, would like to know for sure if it uses a fan or heat sink. If you happen to know of any info on the web which confirms this.....please post a link here. Thank you!

Gary,
Turn on your CFVII and put your ear up to it, on the CFV there is a perforation on the left side that the fans vents through. The heat sink model should not have any sound, the CFV has a very low volume fan whir.
Oh no! Not a Phase vs Hassey thread LOL! Don't try to even convince him, let him be, he will learn.
