Used HC 50mm lens error

Eujin Goh

New Member
Hi all,

I'm needing a little help here. Just received my used HC 50mm lens from Adorama and popped it onto my H3D-39. Fired off 3 frames and then heard the dreaded 'beep-beep'.

Lens Problem - ID 27:1
Reattach lens

I've tried everything. Restarting the camera. Removing the battery, viewfinder and D-back. Each time - I never get past 5 frames before it gives the dreaded error message.

The lens is pretty much a lemon right?
Physically it looks very new.

I've looked at the system status firmware tags (MENU>SETTINGS>SYSTEM STATUS)
mine reads :
body 2.1.0
15.0.0
mag: 2.9.2.1
VF: 1.0.2
Lens: 13.0.0

My other perfectly working lenses (35, 80, 120mm) all have IDs of 12.0.0.

Is there something that I don't know about with this used lens?

This is my first experience with a bad lens from Hasselblad - so I'm tearing my hair out (because I can't use the lens).
Hope someone can enlighten me.

Hi Eujin,

The error you've indicated could be one of a number of problems. It may be a contact problem in the lens connector, mechanical problem on the exposure unit or electrical problem on the exposure unit. The exposure unit is the central shutter in the lens.
With this lens and error indicated it would need a visit to a Hasselblad service center.

The information that you listed:
body 2.1.0
15.0.0
mag: 2.9.2.1
VF: 1.0.2
Lens: 13.0.0

Is the firmware installed in each component. If you press the Drive or ISO/WB balance button on the hand grip that will bring you to a second screen indicating the number of captures for the body or lens.

Thanks for your reply Paul.
I've checked the exposure count on the lens and it only shows 153. I've only shot about 80 test frames to ascertain the error.
The base of the mount looks very new - so I'm guessing that it's been repaired before and the exposure count on the lens has been reset.
My H3D-39 has done 49,000 exposure and it's still running beautifully.

The lens will definitely be going to the service centre immediately as I can't use it. I bought it for a job and it's useless before the job.

I guess I'm definitely going to take up this issue with the seller of the lens because I'm paying two-&-a-half thousand for a lens that can't even give me a couple thousand exposures before failing spectacularly. This is a massive fail. I order the lens over the weekend and it only arrived a 8 hours ago and I can't use it. I now have to rent the same lens. This is very disappointing considering the seller is a big well known camera dealer.
I've used the H system with HC lenses for the past 5 years and I've never had a big problem. Shutter failure after tens of thousands of exposures is expected. But not a used lens that has been given an 'excellent' rating by the camera dealer that has not even seen action.

I've digressed.

Thanks again for your advice, Paul. The lens is making a trip immediately. I have a job riding on this.

How does that work to indicate the number of captures for body or lens Paul?

How do you get to the screen with that info? I tried what you wrote and just got the ISO/WB screen.

Marc, you just have to do the following.

Hit the MENU button.
Scroll to number 4 - SETTINGS. Hit 'Enter'
Scoll to number 4.4 - System Status
>>>
Body: 2.1.0
Mag: 2.9.2.1
VF: 1.0.2
Lens: 12.0.0
<<<<
Hit the 'Next' Button.
you should see:
Body: 43292
Mag:
VF:
Lens: 13224

if you hit the 'Next' button again, it should show you :
Focus calib ID :
3/2397

Bear in mind the figures are referring to my own H3D.
If you change a lens - it'll show a different figure under the 'Lens' portion.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, got it now.

I am embarrassed to say I have less than 2,500 shots on my H3D-II/39. Hardly broken in yet ... LOL!
