Used Hasselblads and Pricing (USA)

First post here!!!

Hello all,
I've been shooting for a good number of years using 35mm and some MF cameras and most recently digital. Lately I've had the yearning to get back to film with MF and am considering a Hasselblad. I kind of have a fair grasp on the different models and their improvements over the years and also the lenses. What I'm having a difficult time with is pricing of used gear. Ebay prices seem all over the place for similiar kits and I'm not sure that ones that are bargain basement priced will be such a good deal. Also not sure if I want to piece meal a kit together buying the components seperately.
I have had my eye on a 503cxi, 80mm f/2.8 CFE, WLF, A12 back presumably all in good condition and seems like it would be good a kit. The seller is looking to get about $1650(US) for it. Just not sure how this compares with the rest of what may be out there and if this a fair price.

Thanks..........

Hi Mark and welcome!

Whether that outfit is a good deal or not depends on what kind of photography you want to do. The 503 series have flash metering built into the body. If you don't do much flash you are paying extra for something you wont use. The 80mm CFE lens has data connections on the back which are useless on a 503 but you are paying extra for them. An 80mm CF lens can be one half the price of a CFE and is just as good. Do you want to use longer lenses? The 503cxi does not have the mirror upgrade which lets you see the entire image in the viewfinder without cutoff. There are a lot on nice outfits out there for around $1000. Are you buying from a dealer or individual? A dealer should warrant the camera where most individuals wont. Without knowing the history of the camera you don't know what condition it is in. The whole thing might need a clean, lube and adjust. Cost could be $300.

All that said check prices at the KEH camera seller. There are many types in many conditions but all have a warranty. If you don't like it for any reason they have a no hassle return policy.

Hoping you get a Hasselblad! Regards, Terry

Hello Mark,

A warm welcome here from me as well.

Terry is quite right but like me he is an old school user.
We both tend to go back to older models because we have good memories from those cameras and lenses.

The 503CXi is a later camera and so is the CFE lens.
If this kit is in good condition not needing a CLA straight away the price is right.
Of course the condition of the kit is more important than the age.
The oldest CFE lenses are now just over ten years old.
The CF lens started in 1982 and was superceded by the CFE in 1998.

There is a good selection of lenses and bodies available at decent prices.
Up to you to decide to buy from a private seller or a trader that offers warranty and a return service.
