TTL Flash System for 2003FCW

Hello friends,

Nathan here. I got really lucky scoring a 2003FCW with a 80mil CFE lens and two backs for only $600 off of craigslist from a lady who clearly did not understand what she had. I have been using it and love everything about it but have some questions about utilizing a flash.

I bought a PC sync cord from flashzebra.com and I was planning on hooking that up to my Canon 580EX II. I was informed that the 2003FCW has TTL capabilities. How exactly does that work? What products do I have to get to get full TTL functionality? My current setup is just the bone stock 2003FCW with the 80mil CFE and two backs.


On a side note:

I actually have two Canon Speedlite 580 EX II's and the Canon Speedlite ST-E2 Wireless transmitter, so I think I have some type of a grand idea. I thought, maybe...just maybe I could hook the male PC sync cable to the lens of my Hassy, have that run to a PC to Hotshoe adapter, having the Canon ST-E2 on the adapter and so the signal would then be output to the 580EXII's. It's a longshot, but what do you all think? I assume that I would have to manually set the output on each flash for varying lighting conditions, but I thought it might be doable. What do you think?


In any case, I'm mainly looking to learn how to gain TTL functionality for my current setup. I was going to buy a Metz Mecablitz, but couldn't exactly figure out the TTL thing because I just can't grasp it yet, so maybe some of you can help me out.... - Then again, if I could somehow gain metering capabilities with my 580EXII's and the wireless transmitter, I would be so happy..or at least just the one flash hooked up to my 2003FCW.

You were very luky, however the lady and you clearly did not understand what you have.
No TTL flash on a 2000 serie !
Synchro flash up till 1/500 with your lens or up to 1/90 with the body. That's not bad at all.

For the flash you may use any standard flash in A mode , M mode or partial -M mode.
Not sure that canon flash may be used, as I have a 420ex one that works only with Canon EOS and has no A mode:
It's the only flash I did not use this last 2 years.

The 2003FCW body is the rarest of all Hasselblad V series bodies.
Only 2000 of those cameras were made.

Lenses with leaf shutters allow flash sync up till 1/500 s.
Do you opt for the focal plane shutter of the body than the fastest shutterspeed is 1/90, you will finf that speed marked on the selector ring of the camera.

The first body with a focal plane shutter to offer TTL flash was the 201F that came after the 2003FCW body.

are you sure? I guess the production number of the 205 FCC must be very low, maybe even lower. Only 2xxx 205 TCCs have been made and those show up on the secondhand market much more often. The 205 FCC had fierce competition from the 203 FE.

No doubt both the 205 TCC and the 205FCC are rare cameras too.

The thing is their production run lasted much longer.
The 2003FCW was less than two years in production.

The 205TCC was the first of the series with lightmetering i.c spotmetering.
At the time of introduction the 205TCC body was offered at the equivalent of 7000 euro.

It reminds me of a large and long time Hasselblad dealer who was given a demonstration of the new 205 TCC camera and lenses.
A body a couple of lenses and two film backs came to a healthy 14.000 euro in the early nineties.

" We have you marked for 10 sets " said the sales rep.
" This is an interesting camera, you can put me down for one set "

This dealer is still in business, the sales rep lost his job six years ago.

Thanks for the replies. So anyone think the Wireless flash idea I have will work? If I hook up the PC sync cable to the hotshoe adapter, the canon wireless transmitter should recognize the signal from the PC sync cable that is hooked up to the body of the 2003FCW, correct? I ordered all the stuff and it should be here middle of the week so I guess I'll find out, but I just wanted to see if anyone has tried anything like that before...
 
It can be done much cheaper and easier.

Get yourself one of the Hong Kong/Chinese flash transmitters for 20 USD and you can trigger remotely any strobe even large studio ones without wires etc.
It is also the safest way to use strobes that have a potentially dangerous trigger voltage for modern cameras.
 
I already have the Canon Flash Transmitter for my Canon 7D setup with the two Canon 580EX II's... so I just was thinking I'd use the transmitter I already have rather than buy another one... :)

When I get the stuff, I'll try it out and report back my findings.
