Trouble with flash sync 202FA

Hi, Hope you folk can help me. I am having trouble getting the flash to fire in manual mode for my 202FA, I can only get the camera to trigger the flash when it is in 'D' which is obviously not ideal. I use a cable plugged into the PC socket to link the flash.
I understand from the manual that the M (manual) mode should be able to fire the flash, am I missing something obvious?
