Phocus software problem for starter

Hi all,

First post and I did try searching this forum section for an answer prior to asking this question.

Today I was fortunate to have my first experience with a Hasselblad camera, the 39meg model - I am utterly blown away by this camera. During the shoot a rep from Hasselblad gave me their Phocus software allowing me to 'play' with my images later, which I'm doing now but am struggling. What I can do is activate and show the crop but what I can't do is action it. In other words, I still see the entire image, the area cropped remains as my exposure dictates with the rest of the image darker, but how to I get the software to process this crop? If I hit the export button nothing happens.

Thank you in advance

Well, this might seem silly, but, I can select an area to "crop", magnify it, but I can't actually CROP the area and export just that area. How does one do that then? Also, using Windows, how do I access 1. The Hand Tool, 2. The Straighten Tool? Pressing R and H do jack. Or, is it that these advanced features are only available to our brothers and sisters using Macs?

David - thank you - I am relieved to see that I am not the only person here confused by this. This is my number one frustration with phocus since typically I crop before I adjust anything else - and it doesn't seem possible using WINDOWS.

Paul - is there a solution now or do we need to wait for the next release ?

Yes, it is a nice programme, but I really wish that they would standardise across both Windows and Mac. Seems silly to have 2 different versions. Alternately, why not let Adobe have the FR3 and FFF file code and just integrate the lot into Lightroom and ACR? Seems Hasselblad are excellent at making camera's, but the CRUCIAL software support is really lagging behind.

David

PS, how do you find the 39mp? I have the 31mp and am absolutely "blown away" with it. Would I notice a BIG difference getting the 39mp back?

Once the crop has been applied, save it by clicking the Icon located in the Title bar. Look for adjustments window above the Main viewer, last icon to the right, mouse over will show "save changes"

or

Select Modify icon in title bar, select Crop and Orientation from the options, click Modify on lower right.

The Thumbnail will reflect the crop using either option above.

When you select the Crop tool at the bottom of the main viewer to deselect crop, then the image in the main window will show the selected crop.

1. The Hand Tool, 2. The Straighten Tool

These tools will be available in Phocus for PC 1.2
which will be available shortly.

Sorry Paul, when I do that, I can Save Adjustments, but when I deselect the crop tool, I just get back the same uncropped picture.

Haahaaa. Phocus 1.2 fixed the non-crop issue of Phocus 1.0.2. It now crops PERFECTLY! Thank you Hasselblad software team.

Or so I thought.....

If you crop and export as DNG..the crop is not exported, the whole picture is. If I crop and export as Tiff then the crop is exported. Seems a bit funny that it would do that.

DNG is the unaltered "negative" the TIFF is the "positive". To crop the DNG would be the same as using scissors to crop a film negative before making a print.
