PC problem with Phocus

i cannot get Phocus 1.2 or 1.2.1 for PC to run on my main xp computer.
also had to load a couple of windows net things

it loads and says successful install, but the program hangs when started, showing the banner and main screen. have to alt-ctrl-delete to end it. tried disconnecting all external drives and card readers, no joy

been in many conversations with hassy tech, even tried a new beta version, as well as the CD version.

the PC version does run on my PC laptop, also the mac version on my MBpro

at one point six months ago, i replaced my C: drive for a larger one, but all has been working fine until the Phocus fiasco

I am glad you've been in touch with Hasselblad support.

It is difficult for me to even make an educated guess at what is taking place without any specs about the computer or age of the computer.

My first thoughts: Not enough memory or the video card is not adequate.

computer is a dell 380 workstation, Pentium D 2.8Ghz, 4Gb ram
XP pro version 2002, sp3
Nvidia Quadro FX 3450/4000 SDI

I'm bringing in a tech to look over my system

Running two monitors is an important bit of information.
I suggest running two graphics cards, one for reach monitor.

From the readme file:

Graphics card
At least 256MB of video RAM is required. Unlike older graphics applications such as Photoshop and FlexColor, Phocus utilizes the processing power available in the graphics card to provide precise real time feedback for adjustment changes. Therefore, just as with Aperture, the viewer performance is very much dependent on the quality of the graphics adapter. In general, more video RAM is better, especially if you plan to work with 30” displays or dual monitor setups. Not all graphic adapters are supported! As a
minimum Direct X 9.0c compatible graphic adapters are required, yet not all are guaranteed to work.

The following is a list of graphic adapters that meets the requirements:
NVIDIA: ATI: Intel:
Quadro series Radeon HD 4800 Series GMA 3500 (limitations apply)
GeForce 9 series Radeon HD 3000 Series GMA 3100 (limitations apply)

since i already have the quadro, and it is approved, do i assume having only 256M of video ram is too punky for my twin monitor setup? should i just get another identical GC, or a better one with mor video ram?

after a quick check, i am finding GC priced from 50$ t0 $4000. a few list directx10 compatible

like this:

I posted a portion of the Phocus Readme file i.e. Graphic cards as a reference.
Checking a manufacturers Readme is always a good place to start. Generally it will tell of improvements, functionality changes, bug issues, known issues etc.
When Quadro is mentioned in the Readme is refers to the Quadro Family of Graphic cards. The number of graphic cards is in the hundreds manufactured by many vendors. Therefore is very hard for me to isolate one card and states this is what you need.

I would suggest looking for a card that has a minimum of 512mb Vram, 1gb would be great and yield a significent improvement on performance. You have to weight the options between cost and performance, the more you pay the better the performance.

My speciality is Hasselblad hardware: V, H and X cameras, digital systems and software unfortuneatly it is not GC.

I did call Nvidia and found that most of the cards listed as compatible are discontinued.

I ended up with the Quadro FX 1800, 760 Mb vram, about $450

just got it and will be installing this afternoon.

installed the new board...BINGO, all is working. both monitors, Phocus, etc.

yippee, this weekend i can get productive!
 
i am up and running but have a few problems:

1. i do not have a "scratchpad" folder on my desktop. consequently, imported files get dumped on the desktop directly.
2. If i try to select a custom location when importing files by editing the location bar in the Import drop down menu, it shows the new location, but then keeps dumping the files on my desktop. the text on the Import drop down box is very slightly clipped at the bottom of each row of text.
3. I cannot click on the Adjustments text on the toolbar, that text isa lso slightly clipped on the bottom, therefore I cannot get to the Adjustments Browser
can sharpening, and other adjusments be turned off by un-clicking the green check mark in the box next to that tool?. i typically like to apply sharpening at the last stage of print prep in CS4

List of files
Capture Destination: Contains the folders that store imported or saved
captures.
When Phocus is launched for the first time, a Scratchpad folder is automatically created and appears on the Desktop, by default. This folder becomes the automatic destination folder for all captures whether they are imported from a CF-card, ImageBank-II or directly from a tethered camera, until you choose otherwise.
In Phocus, you can access the Scratchpad in the File Browser panel under the Capture Destination heading. Clicking on the Scratchpad icon will cause the contents to appear in the Thumbnail Browser.

Other folders can be created or chosen as destination folders instead of the Scratchpad as follows:

1. Create a new folder and name it.
2. Choose the File Browser and navigate down through the menu to the new
folder.
3. Ctrl click / Right click it to display the pop up menu where you can select
‘Use as Capture Destination’.

I suggest creating a new folder on you desktop and drag all the 3f files into that folder.

OPen Import dialog. The top line is Destination > Choose (to choose a existing location or you can create a new folder and this can be your destination for incoming 3f files.

I not sure i am following you. Are you talking about the adjustment Palette in the Adjustments tab? IF so can you resize the Phocus window in order to see all tools on right.
or are you talking about the title bar at top?

finally got some time to get back to this.

first problem:
I created a sub-folder (Imports)into which to place my imports. in the Phocus browser, rt-clk the folder and set it as capture destination. It appears at the top of the browser list as capture destination.
Open the folder containing the 3FR files: my intention is to select all or many, then select Import and they should go the the capture destination, ("Imports").

what happens:
i select the 3fr files, then import. When I do select Import to , duh, import a selected file, a drop down menu appears, showing my desktop as the Destination, (even though the browser shows my "Imports" sub-folder as capture destination). If I then Edit the destination, (third line down, not the top line) selecting my "Imports sub-folder as the destination, the files still go to my desktop.


manually. i transfer the .fff files from my desktop to the "Imports" sub-folder. Now, back in the browser, if I click on the capture destination, showing "Imports" the fff files show up in the viewer, so it is seeing the same folder I am using.



second problem:
I do not get RGB readings when placing the pointer on the image, only jumpy readings, never over 7 or 8 and not for all three colors

my edition is 1.2.1 for the PC

also:

I process files into tiff files, but would like to use the proRGB color space. how do I choose that option?. currently I am getting aRGB from the processing and convert that when importing into CS4
