Metered prisms

Hi

I am currently using a PME3 with my 500CM. Its fine but I used to have a PME45 which I would really like to go back to. They are close to unobtainable in the UK at the moment. There are plenty of PME 90's around. i realise the PME90 is not nearly so good as the PME45 but is it better than the PME3 for focusing? I realise the spot metering and digital exposure information is easier but if it is not as easy to focus id probably stay as I am and wait until a PME 45 emerges.

I only shoot 6x6 incidentally and not 6x4.5

Best wishes

Richard

The metering systems from PME 45 and PME 90 are quite similar.

Keep in mind the PME 90 demands to hold the camera higher.
I would prefer to use the PME 45 when shooting hand held.

How about the PME 51 Polypal? How do you feel that it compares? I am working with the PME 51 now.

Hi Many thanks. I generally use an L grip so that should handle OK.
Its not the metering bit I am worried about. I know its th same in 90 and 45. Its the magnification I am concerned about. With the PME 45 is 2.5x and the PME 90 is only 2x. Does this make a difference. It might actually be harder to use than my PMe3 (not sure of the magnification in this one!).

best wishes

If I remember correctly the PME 3 has about the same magnification as the PME45.

The PME 51 is the last from that PME series.
It is very accurate but of course it does not hve incident and spot metering the PME 45 has.
The PME 51 is calibrated for use with Acute Matte screens.
For centre weigthed metering it performs like the PME 45.

I have the old PM, the "new" PME 45, and the 4x4 (with 5.5x maginfication)
Nothing is perfect ! 2.5x is not enought for me. Foccusing is harder with such viewfinders.
As I have a 202FA the 4x4 is good for fuccusing but does not allow to see the speed values.
This for the standard viewfinder (4.5x) is the one I use dayly !
BTW the 4x4 is perfect for CFV-16 (37x37mm); with the CFV-39(37x49mm), you loose part of the corners.
Hard to believe, but Hasselblad setup is better when it is close to the 1949 model !

I have a PM90 and think its more difficult to focus with than a 45 degree prism. The magnification is less and I think this makes the difference for me. Polypal is right in that a 45 degree Prism is easier to handhaold. The higher position is more prone to shaking for me too.

I also have a sekonic 758 DR meter for spot. I have not worked the PME 51 much and I am working with the EV scale inside it. If I do not end up liking it I will probably switch back to using the NC-2 and the sekonic that I have. that I have. I really debated whether I should try out the PME 51 but a deal came along I just could not pass up.

Thanks for your informative responses.
