Loose focusing screen (501CM)

New Member
Hi,

just got a new 501CM which I am very pleased with. I've noticed the focusing screen sits quite loosely and rattles around a bit when the camera is moved. I was wondering if this is normal?

No, the screen should not rattle. Does the focusing screen rattle because it sits loosely in the camera or is the "glass" of the screen sitting losely in its metal frame?

The whole screen/frame assembly sits loosely in the camera. It isn't held tightly enough by the retaining tabs to stop it shifting about.

A few pictures of the screen assembly and the top end of the camera would help to get an idea hat is going on here.

Could be the screen is not the correct one for this camera or part of the metal frame is missing.

Thanks for your replies. Having looked closely at the screen, there is something odd about the bottom edges of the metal screen frame. They look ever so slightly bent and look like the edges have been filed down slightly - not the quality I would expect from Hasselblad. Maybe I have a non-original screen fitted? It may well explain why it isn't a snug fit. I will try a different screen.

BTW, the screen I have is a plain matte with white crosshairs and two notches on the frame. Looks like an Acute Matte D.

I have added some photos showing the top of the camera, the screen, the rough finish on the corners of the frame, and the clip holding the screen in place.

It apperas your Acute matte Has been "modified" by a prior user.
With care the metal frame can be removed and a standard frame from an older non AM fitted.
That seems the low cost solution for this problem.
Leave the job to a trained Hasselblad technician as this action is not without risk for the AM parts of the screen.
