Intro from Me

Evening all,

I'm new here and I'm looking to set myself up with a simple and tidy V-system setup for film shooting, replacing my current Leica gear.

I'm a mathematician and engineer and I like B&W film, especially technical Pan, so I figure that a nice basic 500/501/503 with 80mm Planar and a couple of A12 backs will get me going just fine.

For now, regards

JAson

Welcome Jason,

You seem to know what you need to get started.
Why an 80 mm Planar and not the 100 mm Planar?
The 100 mm is more the kind of lens you would appreciate given the fact that you like technical pan.
That film is hard to find now.

I think it's the extra bit of aperture that does it for me, plus 80mm seems about right. (I like a 40 or 50mm on a 35mm SLR). The 100mm lens I had a try with the last weekend felt a little bit "long" for much of what I like.

Now all I need to do is to sort out the money and shop around for a decent condition kit. :D

My compliments Jason, you have done your homework well.

I wish you luck finding a good kit at a decent price.
If budget allows stick with CF series lenses or younger ones.

Lenses from the "C" series are less friendly to handle and are likely to show higher mileage.

Welcome Jason,

I am also a Leica R system user who has moved to the Hasselblad V system, using a 203FE 'Millennium Edition' camera with built-in, centre weighted meter that I bought second hand in superb condition.

I have several F / FE lenses but I am using a restored 80mm FE Lens (thanks to Paul) exclusively until I have fully learned the handling of the camera and the basics of V system photography.

That said I was surprised at the quality of the 80mm FE (optically the same as the CF version) for distance and close-up shots and the great Bokeh of the lens.

I hope you get started soon on the wonderful V system.

Regards

Kevin
