Hey, whats up guys - I signed up here in order to get convinced to buy into MF and to pick your brains in general.

Im finishing up school but currently freelance in media (literally, everything; photography, video editing, event production, designing publications, branding/logo design, website design... hell, I've even designed clothing) as best as I can, and am looking into medium format as a possible future investment...

Right now I have the opportunity to buy some new equipment and I am basically here to read about an older Hassy to get me started in MF (possibly a 500CM, or something in that range), but I still need to do more research about what exactly MF entails in regard to my purposes and whether or not digital would be a wiser choice...

So yeah, Ill be picking your brains for a little bit and possibly purchasing a Hassy as a christmas gift/investment (whatever you want to call it haha) if I decided that its right for me. Right now I am a canon user, but the only camera that I own currently is a rebel XT (granted, I have a few L primes... I took the idea of glass before body to heart...).
 
MF does not rule out digital although digital MF comes at a price.......

Do some more reading, the thread about why MF may help you decide whether Hasselblad is the way to go for you.

Oh how I wouldn't mind a digital hassy. But oh how I would mind the debt that would come with it....

Hi All

I have been visiting the Forum for some time, but this is my first post.

I am also looking at buying a Hasselblad Digital - either a H4D 40 or H4D 50. I am currently shooting Canon 5D Mk 2 and 1D Mk 4. Fairly good gear however I would like more resolution and more dynamic range in particular.

As I search on the internet for information that illustrates the performance increase I can gain by going MF, I come away with more questions than answers.

For example, does a Hasselblad at ISO 800 capture more noise than my Canon 5D at ISO 800? If the answer is yes then what I want to know is WHY?

Is it because 16 bit processor captures more colour graduations and therefore is more sensitive to noise?

Is it because Hasselblad do not have the same noise reduction
algorithms as Canon and Nikon (that is Hasselblad does not have it sorted as well)?

Is it it that a larger sensor, 50mp Vs 21mp has just more electrical static to contend with?

Any comment would be most welcome.

For high ISO digital MF is not the place to go. I recently had a very interesting discussion with a technical sales specialist for PhaseOne. He basically said that even though 400 ISO delivers very acceptable quality that is about the limit. He recommended that you really should not go above 200 ISO if you want the quality that MF is all about.

If you are into shooting in the dim and dark go and buy a Nikon or Canon with fast glass to go with it.

I am not chasing high ISO as such but just trying to get my head around the variables, aperture, shutter duration and of corse the third variable ISO.

From the reading I have done, I understand the bigger the sensor in area the narrower becomes the depth of field. So my logic is that where at present I might shoot at f5.6 that will have to become f8 or even f16.
So I see I have three variables left, shutter speed, ISO and Flash.

So, I have just been trying to understand the various dimensions of MF to some extent, one at a time otherwise the convestaion ends up too complex and grinds to a halt.

Also, is there someone in South East Queensland area with a H3D or H4D who would be willing to show me their camera and discuss their experience with these camera?

Hi All

I would like to thank everyone on this forum for sharing their views on their respective Hasselblad gear.

Today I have made the decision on which MFD system I am going with.

I have bought a Phase One P65+ with an upgrade to the IQ160 when they are release. I have also purchased a Cambo DS Wide with a 35mm lens.

I guess it only makes sense that I now resign from this forum - so as soon as I work out how to do that, I will.

By the way we did road test the H4D system with, David Roache at Silver Pixel in Sydney - David and his wife Helen were fantastic and it is with some sadness that we have made the decision to go with Phase One - but one can't have everything.
