I ALWAYS use a filter on my lenses, to keep the kind of stuff that seems to collect on my glasses from collecting on the front element of the lens. Also depending on where you shoot, exposure to salt spray, this can be more important. And by the way, kids with greasy fingers seem to like to touch camera lenses. I figure the less I have to clean the lens, the less chance that I will scratch the coating.
As was mentioned, if the filter is damaged or scratched or whatever, it is cheaper to replace the filter than the lens.
