hardcase for gear ...

Member
hello!

i have now a 500C(M), C 80mm, C 150mm, 12 & 24A back and some loose stuff.
does anybody have suggestions to what case i best use to store/transport this stuff in?

thanks,
maarten.

The best hardcase is no doubt supplied by Hasselblad:
Case 712 in black or the older ones in shiny silver.
Pelican cases are second best to me because Hasselblad has a clever interior with room for filters and other small stuff.

Not a hard back but cleverly designed softbag? Billingham. They cost an arm and a leg but will last decades.
Why? Because their set up allows to take anything and get it from the bag fast when you need it.
The 445 Billingham holds two bodies fitted with lenses and backs, four extra lenses a couple of film backs, loads of small stuff and film of course.

Something to consider that is the best of both worlds.....a Pelican Soft Case 1550 which fits inside a Pelican 1550 hard case (no foam model). I bought this setup recently and it would work very well for a Hasselblad V-system.

Understood....that's why I like the Pelican 1550 hard case/soft case setup. You get the protection of the hard case when needed, but you can pull the fully padded soft case out when you don't need (or want) to be lugging the heavier hard case around (having arrived at your destination, for example). When that 1550 padded soft case is inside the hard case, I don't think your equipment is any less protected than a regular hard case setup, either with the padded dividers or block foam.

Another option, which I also own, is the Pelican 1510 hard roller case. I have the block foam model which I cut to fit my 503CWD-II (with PME45 and 40mm CFE IF attached). It also has room for a 100mm CFE and Seconic light meter.

712

Not as comfortable as the Pelican cases shown here but for me a practical way to store and transport gear with good protection.

This Hasselblad model 712 case shows some of the film backs I have including three Pola backs.
The dividers left and right are fixed and take film backs or complete camera sets.
In the cover are a black pocket where I store extra dark slides and small items.
The two strips take filters.
The layout of the entire case can be adapted by dividers that are fixed with Velcro.
The pocket and the strips in the cover are also fixed by Velcro and can be moved anywhere in the cover.

I like the 712 so much I got me some more.
There are now six of them each loaded with Hasselblad gear.
Is that all? no there is more but those items do not fit in a 712 case.
Now where did I leave my underwater housing ?

Disadvantage of the 712? The case costs an arm and a leg, about a thousand dollar......

so,

i let myself be inspired by the 712-case and went out to the DJ's-store to get me a CD-flightcase.
next stop: DIY-shop for some acoustic foam, fixed it all together with this result:

091230_mg_2020.jpg091230_mg_2021.jpg

inside:
- 500C(M) + 24A-back + 80mm lens
- 150mm lens + 12-back + small gear (lightmeter, cables, film, ...)

time:
- about 135 minutes

costs:
- only a toenail.

Nice job Maarten, is this CD case weather sealed like a Hasselblad 712?

I have been dragging around Hasselblad cases for years and never had a problem with gear inside the cases.
The occasionaly dropped case did not give any problems either.

Paul, is that 712 the same as I recently bought?

Wilko

You showed me a decent case for your Metz gear.
I did not see a 712 last time I was with you.

For those who are wondering why I see Wilko from time to time.
He lives only 40 km from where I live.
So far the only forum member in the area that I know of.

Wilko,

Well done on the great bargain for a hard case and showing real ingenuity in the quest for a better case to protect your camera gear! I am sure that for 95+% of likely conditions (and maybe 100% for many of us), that case will be completely effective in preventing any damage to your Hasselblad cameras and lenses.

I will only offer this additional bit of personal perspective re hard cases. When I received my Hasselblad 503CWD-II kit (with the 503CW body, CWD16-II digital back and 40mm CFE IF lens), which was far and away the most expensive camera I have ever purchased, I of course wanted the very best protection for it. I also knew I wanted a case that would accomodate the camera with the digital back attached, a PME45 finder attached and the 40mm CFE IF lens attached, so I could quickly pull the camera out of the case, put it on my tripod and be ready to shoot.

For me, the Pelican 1510 roller case with custom cut foam was the right choice and perfect solution. Many other cases would not allow me to have the finder attached and still have the same degree of protection (ie foam padding custom fitted to the camera/back/finder/lens. I am fairly confident that my 503CWD will never be damaged in transport, as long as it is safely contained in this Pelican case.

One other thing I like about the Pelican cases....you can take the same case and have it fitted with custom cut foam padding, padded dividers or put a soft case inside it (like the 1550 soft/hard case combination), so if I choose to switch to a padded divider system for my 1510 roller case or 1550 case in the future, all I have to do is buy the padded dividers, not a whole new case.
