H3DII with 39MP or 50MP

Hi all,

First hello to everybody here!!!

I am new to this forum, not new to photography though (do this since 40 years and digital since 10 years). Digital mostly with 24x36 sine available, in the past I have worked in MF with 6x6 (Hasselblad and Rollei) and 645 systems (Contax) in the analog world.

I am going to jump on a MF Digi solution - preferably an H3DII - mainly for landscape, still and portrait work.

The current offer of the 39MP kit is pretty appealing, although I am not sure if I should take some extra money and go for the 50MP version, because of higher resolution, but mainly because of newer and I think better sensor technology.

Any suggestions welcome. :)

i have tried both..the 50 seems to me have better reds...and you get that upgrade to the 60 ....for 10k more

50+

hi,

well, in my opinion it is only a question about money.

the "H3D II 39" set is a perfect choice. the quality is fine the price is harmonic. and your computer is able to handle the files, of course all in 16 bit mode...

the development in the 50+ segment is very fast. and they are still working out bigger and better systems.
maybe in 2 years the standard is 45x60mm sensor with minimum 65 MP.
maybe with a "full color sensor".

and i am sure hasselblad has to redesign their camera system for these new sensors.

because it will not be easy to survive on the market.
thinking of sensor rotation, 45° view finder, camera ergonomic and so on...
and mybe a 6x6 sensor?...

if you invest in a 39mp camera this will be a good investment.
i am sure you will be able to work with this set for the next 4 years, you will have a lot of fun and i hope a lot of success.

and then enter the new aera...

if you do not have to care about money, buy the new one.

:)

If I was you, I will go for the 50,

it's much better and the different is not the much, plus you can change it for the 60 when it come out.

I change from Phase one P45+ to the 50, and I love it.

good luck

Your opinion makes sense.

A few remarks from me on the technical specs:
Full 6x4.5 is actually 56x41 mm
Hasselblads current 50 Mp sensor is pretty close to that with 49.1x36.8 mm
Phase One has a sensor of 53.9x40.4 mm in their P60+ 60,5 Mp digital back.

This is a difficult period for makers of digital MF gear as progress is being halted by the current international financial situation.
Photography is one of the areas that is hit first and hard by financial problems.
New developments in sensor technology and production of systems are only possible if the market is able to pay for systems with larger sensors with more pixels.

The technology is there it is purely a matter of economics whether we will ever see a true 56x56 mm digital back for our cameras.

Let see for evolution of the market.

For years military and security were able to buy a lot of hight level photography gears. Money was nor an issue
Now with the new US leadership. The MF market is far different.
No more height tech war promotion and far less cash for weapon gadgets..no cash at all ! Even some banks seams to be empty.

Perhaps in 2009 the MF digital market will meet photograph's needs.
I was surprised by the promo for the H3D-31 last year.
Perhaps new digital promos next week for the bigest MF market: the Hasselblad-V's owners !

I think , one factor is also , what final size of images do you print .
If your images must be posters , I would go for the newest and biggest sensor sizes .
If you do not go bigger than 40x50 cm even a CFV DIGITAL is a very fine solution and saves you a lot of money and still produces fantastic images .

Still i didn't print with my Epson 3800 on 17x22" [about 43x56cm] paper to see the resolution with my H3D [i printed with Canon DSLSs shots], but i am always thinking to go with larger sooner or later up to say 40x60".

Hm

your answers make all a lot of sense....

Not sure what I will do, although I tend to the 50MP back, because it is newer technology, has less power consumption and is a bit faster.

Prints I am doing till 100 cm x 150 cm, so 50MP make really sense.

Finally I wait for another price reduction over the next few months, I will buy in summer, so there is some time to wait. And I do hope that the introduction of the Leica S2 System is shaking the market a bit up and prices go down a bit over all - at least I hope.
