Focusing screen image question

GrahamPhotog

New Member
Having come from a Mamiya RB67 which has a focusing screen of about 2 1/2" x 2 3/4", and then going to the C/M 500 screen which is only about 2" square I was surprised at how much smaller the 500 screen seems to be. I do notice that the RB67 hood mirror seems to be larger and more convex than than the 'blad. Is there any way to get a higher magnification mirror for my camera?

I was trying to take some pictures today soon after sunrise and was using both cameras. With the RB67 I could see the image crystal clear. With the Hassy, all I could see was a reflection of my face as I peered into it. Also, since the image appears smaller it is harder to get focus confirmation.
Any suggestions out there?

Thanks

Are you using the pop up magnifier on the waist level finder? With that up there shouldn't be any reflections and the screen should be crystal clear.

If you are using a PME45 finder, look into getting a flip magnifier for it. BTW, I use a flip mag on my RZ Pro-II Prism finder also.

Also, does your Hasselblad have the Acute matte screen? The older screens were dimmer.

Well it turns out this was another newbie error. I do have the Acute-Matte D 42215 screen with the WLF that has a pop up mirror. Problem was that I hadn't popped up the mirror. Got that fixed, and so now I can go and play some more.

Focusing screens are not easy to distinguish.
There are three generations wnad each generation consists of several models.

1. Early screens often refered to as the "dark" generation.
Slow lenses and low lightleverls make focusing a difficult job.

2. Acute Matte first generation. Much brighter and easier to phocus under
difficult conditions. Introduced some 20 years ago.
Still much in demand depending on the model these go for 100-200 USD in good used condition.

3. Acute Matte "D" easy to regocnise by the two little cut outs in the rim of the metal frame
An improved version of the first generation AM.
Focusing on bright or brightly lit subjects is much improved.
Currently supplied by Hasselblad prices go from about 250 to 400 USD + sales tax.

Look here as well at the end of the thread: http://www.hasselbladinfo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3926&highlight=screens

LOL, it's not a mirror, ... it's a magnifier. If you popped up the mirror you wouldn't see anything.

Good shooting to you ... further issues? ... always ask here first ... someone on this forum knows the answer to almost anything to do with these cameras : -)

Thanks again. I just got off the phone with KEH and ordered some UV filters and a Cokin holder. Now I am going to have to get an A24 back so that I can use up the several rolls of 220 film that I have.

Over on the Nikonians website we referred to the never ending quest for more Nikon gear as NAS (Nikon Acquisition Syndrome). Is the same malady called HAS over here?

BTW, I am known as Nikon32250 (used to be my zip code) over on Nikonians. They are also a very nice and helpful group.

This site is rampant with H.A.S. (Hasselblad Acquisition Syndrome).

Paul, Jurgen and I have a large case of this disease.

Hello Marc,

I am just lucky my disease has kept pass with my finances........

Tomorrow I will have another strike of HAS when a beautiful 203FE presents itself.
Good thing I have been warned and am prepared for it!

I think I have been diagnosed this morning with HAS by my wife who is not even a qualified physician but she still spotted the telltale signs.
  • Diminishing bank balance
  • The appearance of lots of silver boxes with twin blue stripes all over the place
  • My absence (as I am usually glued to the computer or iphone on Evilbay or this forum)
  • The appearance of old manuals, system catalogues and pricelists all over the house
  • Lots of emails relating to various questions and answers
  • Lots of new parcels arriving at the house from overseas
  • The square image reflected in my eyes
And the cure! :z04_smileys26:

Regards

Kevin

"I think I have been diagnosed this morning with HAS by my wife". I'm sure this has been said a 1,000 times on this forum, but I am dying to say it myself just once. Does your wife ever "hassel" you about your purchases?

OK, I've said it! It's out of my system now.

BTW, what does "thanks" mean as a reply option?

Thanks!

I know I have taken us totally off topic here, and I apologize, but is there anyway I can look at a member's profile and see info like which country they are from, what sort of gear they have, and other information like that ?

My wife gets suspicious when I start doing table top shots of gear I own ... she knows it's a prelude to a sell-a-thon to help fund new stuff.

I've used the line from the "God Father" ... "I'll answer one question about my business, then that's it." ... then proceed to lie just like Michael did ... LOL!

BTW, it never works.

The dilemma choosing between a smart and not so clever companion.

No doubt Mrs. Williams belongs in the first category.

Congratulations Marc!

Off topic is not a problem at all. We are broadminded, no pun...., but the rest is classified information.
Think about the disasters occuring world wide when all better halves find the current state of equipment affairs at the click of a mouse.

The present economic problems will be nothing compared with the crisis that will hit the world then.

The worst sufferers of HAS that I am familar with are not married.

I am not sure if there is any cause-effect involved here..
