Battery for 500 ELM

Two weeks ago I purchased a 500 ELM from a local camera store. It was a very good price, and cheaper than the 500 CM I had been looking at. I did not like the old batteries it came with. I was told that new ones are expensive.

Since then, I have looked into other alternatives. I saw for sale on the net, three types of devices that I could use in place of the big 6 Volt batteries.

One device was a 9 Volt battery adapter. It looked like a great alternative, but the man at the camera store told me it put out too much power.

The second was another adapter that took a small photo battery of 6 volts. It resembled the old battery and all you had to do was put the small 6V photo battery inside of it. Looks like a neat idea too.

The third was a device that held several AA batteries which also converted it to 6 volts. That device was a small plastic black box that had a cable on it that plugged into the motor of the 500 ELM. I liked the idea of using AA batteries.

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons about each of these devices and your actual experience using them? Which is the most efficient, reliable alternative to the old battery? Thanks in advance.

You can also get modern NiMH batteries in the same formfactor as the original NiCd (nikkel-cadmium) batteries.

That is the easiest solution. I built a couple of NiMH batteries for my ELX.
Polypal has seen them, they are quite nice I think.

The use of the 9 V block battery is the cheapest and most versatile alternative.
The voltage of these little batteries drops as soon as the battery is loaded by the winder motor.
Besides that the winder motor can withstand a higher voltage without any problems like excessive wear.
These batteries are quite common and can also be found at bfilling stations.

Wilko engineered a good alternative but his solution is not for sale as far as I know.

I have two 500EL/M bodies, and I'm using this adapter with them:

I spoke to David Odess about these specific adapters, and he could not think of any reason -not- to use them. That is a good enough recommendation for me.

I once built such an adapter myself and that worked fine. The motor is quite overdimensioned and not prone to breaking.

Nine volt batteries can be used without any negative effect for the EL/M/X bodies.
As stated before the voltage drops as soon as the small battery is loaded by the cameras motor.
Besides that these motors can withstand much higher voltage without any extra wear.

Please note this point of view is also supported by Davis Odess an authority on service and repair of Hasselblad V series cameras.

I removed the link to the site(s) of Mr de Koning because the information concerning EL cameras is incorrect.
