Bags, bags and more bags... TTT

In the 1970s here is Australia we had a comedy live show called Tell The Truth.

Anyway for a bit of fun and after the discussion about how best to position a Hassy in a camera case, I thought I'd get our fellow forum members to answer the following question... as honestly as they dare to admit!! :)

QUESTION 1: How many camera bags of any type (for all camera systems you own) do you own?

QUESTION 2: Do you regret having bough any of them?

Now, many of us might not have all in regular use, but the question is how many you have rather than how many you have in active use!!! :)

OK, I'll bite

Hard cases:
  1. Pelican 1400 (regrest this one, I bought it via a forum and didn't realise it was so small
  2. Pelican 1550 (came with teh Blad outfit)
  3. Phase One's hard case
  4. A Kincrome hard case which is about the size of the 1510 but not as deep, and it is bright yellow. It is sold as tool case rather than a camera case and thus was quite cheap.
Soft cases:
  1. My really old little shoulder bag - invaluable for bits and pieces and just one camera - but it is falling apart, unfortunately
  2. A Naneau camera/laptop bag. It is a great bag but too deep, I am putting this one up for sale.
  3. Another soft bag I made from a rolling PC case bought at Woolowrths, of all places. I bought foan to go in it and it fitted my 20D and 30D just fine but of course is now too small for the 1D models.
  4. And of course the Billingham 445 which hasn't arrived yet

This looks like a confession to me.

Hard cases: 6x Hasselblad 712 cases and 2x times the older silver Hasselblad cases.

Soft cases: My Billingham445, a low cost green camera bag and another Lowe Pro bag that I use for a Super Wide with some room for a multisix Gossen lightmeter and a couple of films.

I really shouldn't put this in writing.....if my wife saw it, she'd have a heart attack. I'll only confess to the medium/large format bags. :)

For the 503CWD-II, CFE-IF 40mm, CFi 100 & Sekonic L-758DR meter...a Pelican 1510 rolling hard case
For the 501CM and lenses etc....a Pelican D'Exec series rolling case
For the 553ELX and lenses etc....a LowePro AW backback....I know, why???
For the Ebony 45SU a Kelty Redwing backpack with RPT Lightgear inserts
For the Sinar P an f64 case....perfect!
For the Pentax 67 (Color film) and 5 lenses....a LowePro AW Commercial bag
For the Pentax 67 (B&W film) and 5 lenses .....a LowePro AW Commercial bag
For the Mamiya TLR system....a smaller LowePro bag
Ok...can't leave out the Leica R8...another LowePro bag

Too many other 35mm etc bags to think about......mostly in LowePro bags.

Either I've got too many bags or too many camera systems....I'm not sure which.

Oh....question number 2....nope, I can't say that I regret buying any of these....they all do the job just fine.

Two that I REALLY like are the Pelican 1510 rolling hard case....I just love opening it up and seeing that 503CWD/40mm CFE-IF displayed so nicely...and knowing it's well protected. And the f64 case for the Sinar P....it's a really nice case for a 4x5 monorail view camera, extra lenses, film holders etc.

Bags for heart attack

Hello Gary

Your list makes me :) , but it also shows , that we really need different bags for different equipment .
My back problems do not allow me to carry a HASSY + four or five lenses + CFV back + + + any more .
Therefore I try to reduce the gear to what I really will need . The 1,4x converter is also a big help because of its low weight .
I have a very good Samsonite shoulder bag which can hold the 503CW+CFV-39+the 4/40 IF (or any other lens of similar length) . And that is already heavy enough to carry it for a couple of hours . Don't forget the tripod .:z04_photos:

I think I'm not far behind you Jurgen in the aging back related arena. I couldn't carry any of these medium format shoulder bags for very far anymore. I used to haul those big LowePro Commercial shoulder cases loaded with Pentax 67 gear all over town and country, not anymore. The Lowepro and Kelty photo backpacks help alot when I need to hike somewhere and so equipment gets redistributed as needed. But I suppose, like you, one of these days I'll just have to take less stuff....which might be a good thing. Add the big Gitzo or Berlebach tripod and head.....well, I really need and assistant! My wife used to willingly fill that role, but she's got better things to do now than schlep my gear around. Yes, it's true I think....after 20+ years, the honeymoon is finally over. L0L!

I'm so glad to hear others have trouble with their backs when lugging the gear. My big hard case, fully loaded, guarantees a sore back next day. I now use a luggage trolley where possible, I bought it at the '$2 shop' for $20.00. Invaluable.

It's one of those bargain discount shops that mainly sells what would be classed as 'crap' but occasionally, if you shop carefully, there are bargains. I have always called them '$2 shops'. A lot of their small items are $1 or $2.

Well I had better make my confession about my bags!! :)

I have 7! :( They are:
2 x LowePro Stealth Reporter 650 - 1 for the Canon kit; 1 for the Hasselblad kit - for when I want a bunch of lenses etc during the outing. The design of the shoulder strap and bag form allows me to get it to sit at the base of my spine when I am lugging them around. They never give me backache;
1 x LowePro Stealth Reporter 400 - for when I take a smaller Canon or Hasselblad kit due to the need to travel "lite"
2 x Billingham Hadley - the Pro and the Large. 1 for my Leica M kit and the other for the XPan kit. The satchel type form of these bags make them perfect for rangefinder cameras
1 x original hammer tone Linhof 4x5 case (a bit like the Hasselblad 712. But the Linhof is fitted with enamel badges; brass corners and latches and a magnificent huge thick and soft leather handle.
1 x LowePro large Trecker backpack. Wonderful ergonomics etc enable me to lug it around for 20kms all day and not get a tired back.

I also have 2 cases:
1 x StormCase 2750 roller suitcase size unit - brilliant for putting a system in a plane's belly. The other is the 2500 roller case which is the maximum "carry-on" size and houses the Leica M and Xpan kits.

Fortunately I have never bought a bag / case that became redundant or that i regretted. :)

Hi,
I will for sure not confess or even try to memorize the number of bags I have. So just a selection:

If I want to carry comprehensive Hasselblad gear I use a backpack: LowePro Photo Trekker AW. This is of excellent quality and suitable for very bad weather. I can even strap my Gitzo 326/ArcasWiss B1 to the outside.

My 203 FE kit with some FE-lenses is sitting in a very worn Domke F-1X. I would not expose it to rain but it looks extremely cool.

My Leica M gear is sitting in a small Billingham Alice which holds a lot of lenses because I use only very small glass for that camera. This bag is of excellent quality and weatherproof.

Ulrik, funny thing is that I too have an old Domke - a 30 year old one - the F-803 large Satchel Bag!! Boy is she worn!! But I spray Scotchguard on it once a year to keep it waterproof (just after it has its annual wash in the washing machine!!)

The compartments wore out years ago, so I bought a Crumpler compartment to slip into the Domke, and it works quite well.

I still believe their very wide shoulder straps with the rubber woven in to them are the best in the game!! Great value bags!
