Anyone have file transfer issues?

The short story is that I took my x1dii on a fantastic travel journey and shot in both raw+jpg daily and then eventually raw only and attempted to transfer the files at night for 3 weeks. Hardly anything transferred over despite being left overnight or all day in some cases. I got home and transferred everything over to the desktop dedicated HD (Lacie Rugged 2tb) and saw everything transfer smoothly there and in Lightroom, checked several file imports after ejecting ssd and reformatted the files. After the holidays I go to edit and discover hardly a single Raw file from the trip ever imported which means I have entire days where I only shot raw -missing from my trip entirely. Jpgs are there- but no raws. Smh.

Is I've got two questions:

1. Anyone ever have this problem?

2. Anyone have any recommended recovery software/ services to recover lost files from formatted (and reformatted and then reformatted again) sd cards?

Equipment Used

M1 Macbook Pro /iPad Pro 2021
Satechi USBC Multiport Pro
SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC 3/10 (and a couple other versions compatible with x1dii)
Lacei 1tb mobile ssd secure usb-c Drive

Background info:

My x1dii did have random shut downs and breakouts during that trip, overheating, non starting etc. One with weird color ancient tv screen style banding issues that just quit on my day trip on the beautiful tiny island of Torchello where I just shut the camera down for the next several hours.

Did you transfer using the camera or a card reader?

The only occasions I've ever encountered the color/banding issues involved, in order:
  1. bad card
  2. bad card reader
  3. bad usb cable
  4. bad usb plug at computer

I transferred using a card reader. After the initial non transfers I swapped the cord that came with the Lacie with the cord that came from Hasselblad. Somehow that worked better but I can't figure out why only the Raw files did not transfer.

thank you for your response

Were you able to see the files while on the camera or could you see them when the card was in the card reader?

Hi Boojum, thanks for replying. Yes, I could see the files on camera and in the reader. When the transfer complete message came on after transferring the images onto the hard drive I expect the transfer to be complete. Unfortunately I had to go back my hand and retransfer and re-check many an sd card image section by image section. After much thought I believe it's this trifling Lacie portable drive that's the issue. My large orange one has never had an issue but the mini one has had cord transfer problems in general so...yeah. I'm just realizing that I need to hire someone to just recover what is possible and go from there.

Any recommendations for recovery software or people to hire would be helpful.

Thanks all!

File recovery is generally a process for operating on the ORIGINAL source of the files. Which would be your memory cards. If your memory cards have not been reformatted I suggest you start over with a known good card reader and USB cable.

If you had good files on the memory cards and bad files on the destination after transfer I suspect there may not be anything on the destination media to recover.

Having said that, there are several free trial file recovery products listed on the internet. My suggestion would be to identify one with a free trial and see if it does anything useful before purchasing. And certainly before hiring someone.

If you decide to hire a professional file recovery service, get your checkbook ready.
