80mm shutter mod so no aux. shutter is needed

I'm wanting to modify the 80mm 'new' C that came with my 501c so that it's shutter operation is the same as that of a SWC.
I don't need to use it conventionally anymore as I've also got a 100CF and a 110FE.

Why ? I hear you asking :

1.. If I use it on the flexbody -
I can eliminate the irritating step that requires the insertion and removal of the dark slide between exposures.

2.. This is actually where the inspiration came from -
So I can celebrate 50 years of Hasselblad in space make a 'Schirra' Hasselblad point and shoot.

The Hasselblad 500C, with a planar 80mm lens (modified), was the first Hasselblad camera to be used by NASA in space.
It was purchased by the astronaut Walter M. Schirra from a camera shop in Houston, Texas.
Modification, carried out by NASA, involved removing the lining, mirror, focusing screen and hood, among other things, to make the camera lighter.

I will pick up an ugly 500C from KEH and remove the auxiliary shutter and mirror.

I've got access and experience with lathe and milling - so new body parts should be no problem.

But I'm not so sure what's needed to modify the lens - anyone got experience in this area ?

Hello Donald,

I gues you are looking for the shutter as used in the Hasselblad MK series lenses.
That shutter operates exactly like the shutter in a view camera with the exception that it can not be opened to adjust focus and frame of the subject.

I have no idea if these shutters are still available from Hasselblad.
Please note Carl Zeiss does not sell spares for lenses anymore.
I happen to have a shutter from an MK camera but that shutter belongs to my 100 mm MK lens.
That lens was modified with a standard shutter to make focusing with a Hasselblad body possible.

Hi Vic,

That's exactly it like a large format shutter - but with a faster more robust lens assembly = MK70.

As that camera was born out of workshop modifications to a standard camera,
my hope was that, what was done by NASA back in the '60s might be reproducible without needing to change out the entire shutter assembly.

I found some Hasselblad sectional lens drawings of scribd today:
It looks like there's a lot of work - essentially total disassembly of the lens elements and mount just to get in to the shutter area.

I might just give David Odess a call - it could be worth spending $200 or so to get it done expertly.
