Hi all,

Do you think the 503 CWD remains a good horse today? Can the back be removed?

Thanks for your feedbacks.

Cheers.

Hi, it is still a great horse, i was hoping to get this one over my 501CM, and i think the back can be removed, if not then look at 503CW instead.

I hope it still is...

... after the bunch of cash I dumped on it! :)

Anyway, Yes, you can remove the back as if it were a regular back, and witch if for any of the standard film backs.

+1 re Double Negative's comments....but I do wish my CFV-16 II had a bit more resolution and was a full frame sensor....or short of that, had the CFV-39 sized sensor. 30-40 mp would be more than enough for my needs. 16 mp, when I often crop to a rectangular sized image/print, just doesn't feel like enough anymore.

I think I've gotten spoiled. Wasn't that long ago that 16mp would have felt like ALOT of resolution.

Really nice to be able to swap film and digital backs....alot to be said for this system.

never seen a shot by a CFV-16 with the square sensor, would be cool if you could post some portraits of people on here for me to see....i would really appreciate that my friend.....

I'll see what I can come up with......although I very rarely take portraits of people, or even simple casual pictures of people for that matter. Now if you'd like to see some photos of old junk, industrial equipment etc....I can quickly respond. :)

Surely there must be someone else here with some good portraits taken with the CFV back. Marc Williams (Fotografz) for one, should have some great shots.

would be great if you could post what you have of course and perhaps just take a picture of a family member with an 80mm C or 150mm C lens....i wanna see what it all looks like.....just outside in daylight, f4 or whatever lets see some bokeh....as i said, if you can that would be great.....

From what i read about CFV-16 it seems the sensor dimensions will be 36.7 x 36.7mm, so it is like i have H3DII-39 and crop one dimension, why not get CF-22 instead or CF-39 and crop, you will have more resolution at first then when crop for square you get same as CFV-16, so it is like you will have 2 backs instead of one, i cropped shots from my old H3DII-39 for square and the resolution is still high and same as CFV-16 square, but i know the price is an issue maybe.
CFV-39 has an option to choose between full 39mp 1.1 factor or square 29mp 1.5 factor.

I will wait much longer tie before i can think of a digital back for one of my film cameras [RZ & 501CM], i still want to go with Phase One that time then, but who knows what will Hasselblad and Leaf bring more in the market later.

I've recently visited the company that represents Phase One and Leaf in the Netherlands. The friendly folks over there had all the time in the world to explain things to me, and have me play with PhaseOne cameras equipped with Leaf and PhaseOne backs. No V-series unfortunately, although I got an invitation to use a V-series back once they have one in house. Need to bring my own V-camera kit though ;)

Leaf and Phase One are very different beasts. Without the slightest doubt I myself would go for the Phase One. The engineering principles guiding P1 are clearly robustness and ease of use during the shoot. No protruding battery etc etc. Want to really tweak the captured image? Use your computer for that.

Leaf is in my engineer eyes much more fragile, touch screen, protruding battery, overall feels less bulletproof. But Leaf does have more features in the back itself.

PhaseOne P25+ I want.. 1.1x crop being one of the main reasons. Unfortunately they are quite rare as refurbished backs :-( And new no longer available.

P45+ is a bit too much on the expensive side :p

In fact i was meaning by waiting is that maybe those companies will produce cheaper digital backs, i have H4D-60 and not looking to get P65 or Leaf 80mp, i wish that ofcourse but i think my Hasselblad 60 will see the light for long time, so i was thinking for a new digital back [not used or refurb] to use with my film camera and not necessary to be 39mp or more, 20-30 will be fine for me if i can find new, i think there is something new from LEAF and Hasselblad, but i will wait more as who knows, they might produce 30mp digital back in the price of 16-22mp in the past or cheaper, or even those current models will be cheaper if newer higher mp backs will be released.

If I could afford it and had the choice, I suppose I would go with the CFV-39 rectangular format back instead of the CFV-16 square format for my 503CW and/or 501CM and 553ELD....despite the fact that I really wish the CFV-39 was a square sensor.

I actually crop/print most of my square format negs or digital image files to a rectangular format, which of course, maximizes my image size on standard inkjet papers. But I can't imagine having to rotate my 503/501/553 to get the vertical format (ie, not have to crop), since I'm often using a waist level finder.

Yeah, I'm pissed at Hasselblad for not offering a higher resolution, square sensor back (preferably full frame) as a follow up to the CFV-16, instead of taking the easy route with the rectangular CFV-39/50....but I understand it's all about the economics blah, blah, blah. :)

However, we're off track here....the original question was with regards to the 503CWD and I think that camera is normally configured with a CFV-16 back.

That is the nice thing of the PhaseOne backs, one can also mount the back in portrait orientation.

I thought it was not so important. But when you are at the studio the vertical way may arrive and the problem is not for the viewer only, but the way to carry the heavy body for long time. Outside you may have the same by the fact that the flash is not fit at the good place.
